  • About the Artists
  • Russia's foremost Shostakovich Quartet was founded in 1966. It won an international reputation after its successful appearances at the 19th International ARD Competition in Munich (1970, third prize) and the 23rd Leo Weiner International Competition in Budapest (1973, first prize).

The quartet's repertoire embraces the standard works by European composers - including Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann, and Brahms - as well as the works for string quartet by the Russian composers Glinka, Tchaikovsky, Borodin, Glazunov, and Gretchaninov.

The artists have always felt the greatest affinity with Dmitri Shostakovich's quartet music. They have performed the complete cycle of all his fifteen string quartets on numerous occasions, most recently at the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival. In 1979, the ensemble was officially designated Shostakovich Quartet.

The Quartet has recorded more than fifty CDs and LPs released by Olympia (UK), Melodia (Russia), Deutsche Gramophon (Germany), Ricordi (Italy), MFSL (USA), Toshiba EMI (Japan) and Sacrambo (Japan). The members of the Quartet teach at the Moscow Conservatory.
