  • About the Artists
  • Tapestry, a Boston-based ensemble of women's voices, was founded in 1995 by Director Laurie Monahan, mezzo-soprano, Cristi Catt, soprano, and Daniela Tosic, alto. The ensemble made its concert debut with Steve Reich¹s Tehellim at Jordon Hall in Boston in a performance deemed "a knockout" by the Boston Globe. The trademark of the ensemble is combining medieval repertory and contemporary compositions in bold, conceptual programs. Critics hail the rich distinctive voices of this extraordinary ensemble, their "technically spot-on singing" their emotionally charged performances, their lovely, impeccably delivered harmony and their effortless, mind-boggling, complex counterpoint.

Tapestry has appeared throughout the United States and in Canada; engagements abroad include the early music festivals of Utrecht and Maastricht, Regensburger Alte Musiktage, Le Donne in Musica, Jubilee Festivities for the Millenium in Rome, and the Flanders Festival of Gent and Brussels.

Tapestry recorded four CDs for Telarc. Their recently released fifth CD, "Sapphire Night", for the German label MDG, combines music by Hildegard von Bingen with "Nine Order of Angels" by Boston composer Patricia van Ness. Fanfare called it "a strikingly accomplished vocal ensemble", and the Suedwestfunk had this to say: "Medative, ecstatic and ethereal sounds, surprisingly clear and beautiful as offered by Tapestry. This ensemble remotely reminds one of the art of the Bulgarian women’s choirs. They differentiate themselves from other singers in the medieval genre by their sound. They blend as well together as, for instance, Anonymous Four, but Tapestry’s sound is not as soft, but more in relief, more metalic, and in expression somewhat more earthy. The vocal ensemble masters its repertoire so brilliantly, that this old and spiritual sound must enchant the listener...In short: a pleasure!" For this recording, Tapestry won the 2005 Echo Klassik award, one of the world's most prestigious awards in the field of music.

"... an outstanding performance such as I have rarely heard, beginning with a smooth legato of utter perfection in a low restricted range, then gradually expanding upwards with ecstasy to reach a top D with amazing control."
        -- Gramophone Magazine

Tapestry is "fast carving a formidable reputation as one of North America's most polished ensembles specializing in the performance of medieval and contemporary vocal music."
        -- Classic CD

"An ensemble that plants haunting vibrations, old and new, in our ears."
        -- Cleveland Plain Dealer

    "...hypnotically beautiful..."
        -- San Diego Reader
