  • About the Competition
  • This competition for young cellists is the first competition organized by the Holland-America Music Society (HAMS) and is organized in collaboration with Arts at Argonne.

    The HAMS is a not-for-profit organization based in Chicago. Its mission is to provide encouragement in the form of performance opportunities and the use of an excellent instrument to an outstanding young cellist who has embarked upon a professional career.

    The main prize of the HAMS Cello Competition 2000 will be the use for one year of a cello made by the Dutch violin maker Koen Johan Herman Padding and a cello bow made by Keith Sleeman of Amsterdam.

    In addition, the winner of the competition will be invited to perform at several concerts and events.

    The semi-final and final rounds of the HAMS Cello Competition 2000 are open to the public. There is no charge for attending the semi-final round (Saturday, May 20, 2:30-5:30 p.m.). Admission to the final round (Saturday, May 20, 8:00 p.m.) is $12; tickets will be available at the Box Office.

  • Location
  • The competition will take place in the Auditorium of the APS Conference Center (Bldg. 402) at Argonne. The competition is open to the public; no special permit is required to enter the Laboratory site.

  • Dinner Arrangement
  • A special four-course dinner prepared by chef Chris Kaminsky will be offered at the Argonne Guest House restaurant. Dinner hours from 5:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. $22.95 per person. Reservations requested (630-739-6000).


  • Post-Concert Reception
  • The audience is invited to join the judges and participants at a reception following the final round of the competition.

    The Holland-America Music Society (HAMS) Chicago invites qualified cellists to participate in the HAMS Cello Competition 2000. This competition for young cellists is organized in cooperation with Arts at Argonne at Argonne National Laboratory, located approximately 25 miles southwest of Chicago.

  • The HAMS is a not-for-profit organization based in Chicago. Its mission is to provide encouragement in the form of performance opportunities and the use of an excellent instrument to an outstanding young cellist who has embarked upon a professional career.

  • The HAMS Cello Competition 2000
  • The HAMS Cello Competition is an open competition held annually in the Chicago area. The main prize of the HAMS Cello Competition 2000 will be the use for one year of a cello made by the award-winning and internationally renowned Dutch violin maker Koen Johan Herman Padding, with a bow made by Keith Sleeman of Amsterdam. The winner will be allowed to use the instrument on a full-time basis during this year, both for practice and performing. In addition, the winner will be invited to perform at several concerts and events organized by the HAMS.

  • Application and Audition Procedures
  • Each participant must fill out the This application form must be submitted to the Holland-America Music Society and delivered on or before April 5, 2000.

    A participant may choose a live audition or a tape audition in the preliminary round. This choice must be indicated on the application form.

    Live auditions will take place in Chicago on April 9 and 10.

    Applicants who choose a tape audition must submit three copies of an unedited cassette tape with the tape repertoire. The tapes must be delivered to the Holland-America Music Society on or before April 15, 2000.

    Participants will be notified of the results of the preliminary round no later than April 15, 2000.

    A maximum of twelve participants will be invited to perform in a semi-final round of live auditions on May 20, 2000 from 2:30 pm until 5:30 pm. Each semi-finalist will perform 10-15 minutes of selections from the entire competition repertoire. The selections will be chosen by the members of the jury. The semi-final round will take place in the Auditorium of the APS Conference Center at Argonne National Laboratory, 9700 South Cass Ave, Argonne, Illinois.

    Three finalists will be invited to perform in the final round of the competition on May 20, 2000, starting at 8:00 pm. Each finalist will perform approximately 30 minutes of selections from the competition repertoire. The selections will be chosen by the members of the jury; they may or may not be the same as the selections chosen for the semi-final round. The final round will take place in the Auditorium of the APS Conference Center at Argonne National Laboratory, 9700 South Cass Ave, Argonne, Illinois.

    The semi-final and final rounds are open to the public.

    The name of the winner of the HAMS Cello Competition 2000 will be announced in a ceremony following the final round on May 20, 2000, after jury deliberations. Results from both the semi-final and final rounds will count towards the final decision.

  • Concert Appearances by the Winner
  • The winner of the HAMS Cello Competition 2000 agrees to perform for Arts at Argonne in “The Next Generation” - Young Performers in Recital series at Argonne National Laboratory on May 21, 2000 at 3:00 pm. The fee for this recital will be $700 for the cellist and $300 for an accompanist.

    All additional concerts awarded at the competition and other performances or recordings related to HAMS or the HAMS Cello Competition 2000 must be performed on the cello made by Koen Johan Herman Padding.

  • Accompanists
  • Participants will be expected to perform with an accompanist. Suggested Chicago-based pianists are

    Participants will be allowed to use their own accompanists.

  • Recordings
  • Both the final round on May 20, 2000 and the recital on May 21, 2000 will be recorded live. These recordings may be used for (live) radio broadcast. The HAMS has the rights to these recordings and all other recordings of concerts and events related to the HAMS or the HAMS Cello Competition 2000.

  • Accommodation and Travel
  • Invited semi-finalists will receive free accomodation, complements of the HAMS, in a shared double room in the Argonne Guest House, a Sodexho Marriott Hotel located next to the Auditorium, for the nights of May 19, 20 and 21. If a single room is desired, the participant will need to make his or her own reservation and be responsible for the costs. Participants are responsible for accomodation and travel expenses for their accompanists. Reservations for the Argonne Guest House can be made at (800) 632-8990 or (630) 739-6000.

    Semi-finalists from outside the Chicago area will receive a stipend towards air travel, complements of the HAMS, of up to $100.00 (up to $300.00 for finalists) upon show of receipts. The winner of the competition will receive, in addition, one free roundtrip to Chicago for a future engagement.

    Argonne National Laboratory is located 25 miles southwest of Chicago, about a 30-minute drive from downtown, and about a 30-minute drive from O'Hare and Midway airports. Parking is free.
