In keeping with the quartet's namesake, the great naturalist, explorer, and Sierra Club founder, John Muir, the quartet donates the proceeds from its much-touted EcoClassics CDs to a variety of environmental and conservation organizations. Its recordings of two Beethoven quartets (Op. 132 and the Grosse Fuge) on this label received a Grammy nomination. This season, the quartet will record the Beethoven quartets Op. 130 and Op. 131 for EcoClassics. The Muir can also be heard on recordings for ADDA/Qualiton and EMI, for which it received two Grand Prix du Disque awards.
The members of the Muir String Quartet are all graduates of the Curtis Institute of Music, where they studied chamber music with Felix Galimir and members of the Guarneri Quartet. The Muir String Quartet is in residence at Boston University's School for the Arts.
