Argonne Chess Club
The Argonne Chess Club is affiliated with the Argonne Club.
Who can join?
Membership in the Argonne Chess Club is open to employees of Argonne National
Laboratory, the U.S. Department of Energy, the University of Chicago and
contractors and students who work at one of Argonne's sites. It is also
open to former employees, retirees and students of these organizations.
When does the club meet?
The club does not hold regular meetings, but does sponsor one team in
the Chicago Industrial Chess League (CICL) and holds occasional chess tournaments
for Argonne employees.
What's the Chicago Industrial Chess League?
The CICL comprises more than 20 chess teams from Chicago-area industrial,
educational and government organizations. The league is divided into three
divisions -- North, East and West. During a season that
lasts roughly from Labor Day to Memorial Day, six-person teams play about
10 intra- and interdivisional matches. To end the season, the top teams
enter an eight-team Swiss-system tournament to determine
the league champion. The final two playoff rounds are generally played
on the third Saturday in May.
