The landfill area was used for the disposal of certain types of liquid wastes from 1969 to 1978. The wastes were poured into a French drain that consisted of a corrugated steel pipe placed in a gravel-filled pit dug into an area previously filled with waste. The liquid waste was poured into the drain and allowed to permeate into the gravel and thence into the soil and fill material. Available documentation indicates that 109,000 L (29,000 gal) of liquid waste were placed in this drain. Many of the wastes disposed of in this manner are now defined as hazardous wastes. The presence of volatile and other toxic organic compounds has been confirmed by soil gas surveys conducted at the landfill. Measurable amounts of these materials were identified in soil vapors and in shallow groundwater of the landfill.
