Speakers Bureau: The Promise of Computers
Argonne speaking topics related to computers and computer technology
include:
Smart Cards: Storing More Data in Less Space – New technologies
have compressed the space needed for computer memory, allowing a person's
life to be recorded on a card that fits in a wallet. A look at the science
and technology that makes this possible and at the prospects for the
future.
Modeling Reality – Depictions of everything from viral
infections to weather systems are becoming more accurate. Using virtual
reality programs, it's even possible to walk into the middle of a chemical
or nuclear reaction.
Keeping Data Safe – Beware! There are hackers out there. And
there are viruses that treat your hard drive like a sandcastle in a hurricane.
There are also ways to make your computer storm resistant.
The Internet: A Roadmap for Research – There's a lot of information
in cyberspace. Some of it is even worth digging out. The question is
how to separate the gems from the dirt. Hints on effective ways to do
research on the Web.
Computers and Our Lives – More and more, computers are
becoming interwoven with everything we do. Computer chips appear in places
we wouldn't expect them. Speakers will discuss various applications,
depending on their specialties.
Making Better Software for Everyone – Software is an
integral, and constantly evolving, part of modern life. Presumably it
just gets better and cheaper – but how? One major class of contributors
to this process is the international organizations that work on standard
engineering methods and protocols. A look at the way these operate.
