History

The Environmental Research (ER) Division is a direct descendent of Argonne's Radiation Physics Division, one of the five original research divisions formed when the Laboratory was chartered in 1946.

Modern environmental concerns and today's recognition that environmental problems are highly complex have broadened the ER Division's focus on radiation research to encompass a wide range of disciplines.

The multidisciplinary nature of the ER Division's work is expressed in the Division's mission statement.

Mission

The mission of Argonne's Environmental Research Division is to perform and facilitate world-class research in the areas most important for addressing environmental problems critical to the interests of DOE and the nation.
