President Bush invited Argonne's Michael Thackeray to the White House in February 2007 for a round table discussion on lithium-ion batteries for transportation, including plug-in hybrid electric vehicles.

As a battery expert, Thackeray provided an overview on advanced lithium batteries, addressed the challenges of advanced battery research and development, and showed the path forward to commercially viable lithium-ion battery-powered vehicles.

Thackeray also has a street named after him at the Innovation Hub in Pretoria, South Africa. A native of South Africa, Thackeray was one of 11 South African scientists and innovators honored with his own street name. The Innovation Hub is the first science park in Africa.
