Crawford elected fellow of physical society

Roy Kent Crawford (IPNS) has been elected a fellow of theAmerican Physical Society for developing neutron- scattering instruments and data-acquisition systems for pulsed neutron sources.

Fellowship recognizes outstanding contributions to the field of physics and is limited to no more than one half of one percent of the society's membership.

Neutron scattering is an essential research tool used to understand precise details of the positions, motions and magnetic properties of atoms in solids and liquids. Neutron scattering plays a fundamental role in materials science, chemistry and condensed matter physics, and is also important in understanding aspects of large biological molecules and engineering materials.

Crawford has been developing new neutron-scattering instruments for Argonne's Intense Pulsed Neutron Source (IPNS). For the past three years, he has led Argonne's effort in the Spallation Neutron Source project, an accelerator-based, short-pulse, neutron-scattering facility to be built at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. He is responsible for $115 million in funding for this project.

Crawford started with Argonne in 1975 as a research associate. He was named senior physicist in 1991.

He has been a member of the American Physical Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science since 1968. Crawford has been a member of the Neutron Scattering Society of America since 1995.

He has written more than 70 journal articles.

Seminar to focus on increasing sponsor base

Employees seeking to expand their sponsor base in a world of reduced government spending are invited to participate in a course on program development at Argonne-East March 27-29.

Custom-designed for federally funded research and development centers, the three-day course provides the methods, skills, tools and techniques to establish new business alliances and better manage ongoing sponsor relationships.

Participants will learn how to position their organizations in the marketplace and how to build their reputations with existing and potential customers.

Program Development is designed for program directors and managers, engineers and scientists, and legal, technical support and technology transfer employees.

The cost is $850. Registration deadline is Friday, Feb. 18. To register, contact a division Training Management System Representative. For more information, call ext. 2-3410.

ANL-West nominations
sought for women's awards

Nominations are being sought for two awards recognizing the contributions of women to the Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory (INEEL) and persons making contributions in the promotion and advancement of women.

The INEEL Women of the Year and the Federal Women's Program Recognition awards will be presented at luncheons in March marking Women's History Month. The luncheons will be held in Idaho Falls and at Argonne-West.

The Sixth Annual INEEL Women of the Year Award will honor an INEEL woman who has made significant contributions in her career field and in her community.

The Third Annual Federal Women's Program Recognition Award will honor an INEEL employee, male or female, who has made contributions in the promotion and advancement of women in the workplace.

Both awards are sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy Idaho Operations Office Federal Women's Program, the Bechtel (BBWI's), Diversity Initiatives Department and Argonne-West's Office of Diversity.

Nominations for either award can be made for any full-time Argonne-West or INEEL employee and DOE-ID, BBWI and INEEL-related contractors. Nominations will be reviewed and selected by a panel comprising representatives from DOE-ID, BBWI, and Argonne-West.

The deadline for nominations is Wednesday, Feb 23. Send nominations to Linda Hansen (ED), Building 713, or MS 6000. For more information, or a nomination form, call Hansen at ext. 3-7640.

Junior Achievement seeks Argonne's help

Argonne-East employees are needed to help bring Junior Achievement programs to schools in nearby Lemont.

The curriculum, on economics and the workplace, is geared to the third, fourth and fifth grades. Junior Achievement produces a kit, custom-made for each grade level, containing all the information and materials needed to teach children about their place in the economy and how the economy works.

Bromberek School will hold an "Academy Day" Tuesday, March 21, when volunteers go to their assigned classrooms and present the program, which usually takes about 2½ hours.

Representatives from Junior Achievement will be available in the Building 213 Cafeteria the week of Feb. 14 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. to discuss the program with potential volunteers.

For more information, call Karen DeLara-Menozzi (DEP) at ext. 2-4495.

Inactive accounts may be charged

Employees with inactive accounts at the Argonne Credit Union may be charged a fee, or lose their money -- by law -- to the state.

A fee is charged after two years of inactivity to cover the cost of maintaining the account. It is only assessed on accounts with up to $1,000 in total balances and only if the owner is over 18 years of age.

Once an account hasn't been used in five years, the credit union is obligated to turn the money over to Springfield, said President and CEO Marite Plume. Reminder letters are sent before this happens.

The best way to avoid fees is to use the account, Plume said, and to make sure the credit union has a current address so financial statements and other correspondence aren't misdirected or lost.

For more information, call the Argonne Credit Union at ext. 2-5800.
