Argonne-East will be the site of a trio of cello events the weekend of May 19-21. Co-sponsored by Arts at Argonne and the Holland-America Music Society (HAMS), all events will take place in the auditorium of the laboratory's Advanced Photon Source Conference Center.
On Friday, May 19, at 8 p.m., the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Cello Section will perform music by J.S. Bach, Albinoni, Haydn, and others, ending with a performance of Johann Strauss' Overture to "Die Fleidermaus."
Tickets for the concert are $20; $15 for students with ID.
On Saturday, May 20, at 8 p.m., three cellists between the ages of 16 and 26 will compete in the final round of the HAMS Cello Competition. Each will play approximately 30 minutes from repertory chosen by the judges especially for the event.
Tickets for this final round of competition are $12.
On Sunday, May 21, at 3 p.m., the winner of the cello competition will perform a solo recital. Tickets are $10 for adults; $5 for students; $25 for a family. This recital is part of Arts at Argonne's recital series "The Next Generation -- Young Performers in Recital."
The winner of the competition will have the use for one year of a new cello made by the famous Dutch violin maker Koen Padding. Besides the Arts at Argonne recital, the winner will perform in the Dame Myra Hess Concert Series and WFMT's "Live from Studio One" series. He or she will also have a solo appearance with the Highland Park Strings on their 2000-2001 subscription series and will participate in an ensemble concert with members of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra on its popular chamber music series. The winner also will record a compact disc on the new Holland-America Music Society label.

Argonne-West employees who use woodworking and general shop equipment -- both stationary and portable tools -- can attend safety and instruction seminars Wednesday, May 17, and Tuesday, May 23.
Prepared and presented by the Eastern Idaho Technical College, each session will last about three hours and will be held in the Laboratory and Office Building Conference Room.
Two sessions on May 17 will be reserved for Argonne-West employees in Plant Services, Mock-up and Machine Shop who use this type of equipment at work. Sessions on May 23 will be open to all employees.

Maurice Goldhaber, director emeritus of Brookhaven National Laboratory, will speak on "A Student at the Cavendish Laboratory in the 1930s" at a director's special colloquium Thursday, May 11.
Goldhaber's talk will begin at 3 p.m. in Argonne-East's Building 362 Auditorium.
Goldhaber, together with James Chadwick from the Cavendish Laboratory at Cambridge University, was the first to accurately measure the mass of the neutron, a fundamental particle found in atomic nuclei. Their 1934 discovery showed the neutron was not a compound of a proton and an electron as was believed at the time, but a new particle.
All employees whose schedules permit are invited to attend the colloquium.
To mark National Buckle-Up Week, May 22-26, the Argonne-East Traffic Safety Committee will sponsor informational displays in the Building 213 Cafeteria at lunchtime.

An upcoming exhibit at the University of Chicago's Regenstein Library will present a panoramic view of the scientific article from its modest origins in 17th century London and Paris to the vital mainstay of scientific endeavor it is today.
The exhibit, titled "The Scientific Article: From the Republic of Letters to the World Wide Web," was developed by Argonne's Joe Harmon (CMT) and Alan G. Gross of the University of Minnesota.
Among the 150 items on display are the first scientific journals from England and Europe, an article by Thomas Jefferson, watercolor botanical illustrations in an 18th-century scientific journal, the first graphs and periodic tables, early scientific publications by women authors and original reprints of Einstein's relativity articles.
Items in the display were culled from the extensive science holdings in the Joseph Regenstein Library and its Department of Special Collections, the John Crerar Library and the Chemistry Library at the University of Chicago.
The exhibit will run through Aug. 21. It is free and open to the public. However, anyone without a University of Chicago library card must go to the library's Privileges Office and show a photo I.D. for admittance.
There will be a special showing of the exhibit Friday, May 12, from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Anyone interested in attending should call Harmon at ext. 2-7535.

A representative from Metropolitan Life Insurance Company (MetLife) will visit Argonne-East on three successive Tuesdays -- May 9, 16 and 23 -- to meet with individual employees for insurance comparisons and quotes for the "METPAY" group automobile and homeowner's insurance program.

Sign-up is underway for a vegetarian cooking class led by Argonne's Guest House Restaurant Executive Chef Chris Kaminski.
