McCune receives 2000 Herbrand Award
for contributions to automated deduction

Senior scientist William McCune (MCS) will receive the 2000 Herbrand Award for exceptional contributions to the field of automated deduction.

The award is given by the Conference on Automated Deduction (CADE) Inc. to honor exceptional contributions to the field.

McCune was cited for his outstanding success in answering the Robbins question, which had challenged mathematicians and logicians for six decades, and for his design of the powerful program Otter, which has become a benchmark for automated deduction programs.

McCune's contributions to the field also include powerful inference rules and numerous new strategies that have dramatically increased the likelihood of finding a proof.

McCune is without peer in answering open questions in such diverse areas as combinatory logic, group theory, algebra and logic calculi. Most recently, he has ventured into yet another area of automated deduction: program verification.

The Herbrand Award will be presented at CADE-17, a conference to be held in Pittsburgh in June. The award is named for French mathematician Jacques Herbrand (1908-1931) who developed an important theorem in mathematical logic with applications to theorem-proving by computer.

CADE is the major international forum at which research on all aspects of automated deduction is presented. The first conference was held in 1974. CADE Inc. is a subcorporation of the Association of Automated Reasoning.

Robbins Problem answer: `yes'

The Robbins problem, which has puzzled mathematicians and logicians for more than 60 years, was solved in 1997 by automated reasoning software developed by William McCune (MCS).

The Robbins problem deals with Boolean algebra -- a mathematical model of some of the basic rules of logic and thought. Robbins asked whether one set of rules is powerful enough to capture all of the laws of Boolean algebra.

One way to state the Robbins problem in mathematical terms is to ask if the equation "not(not(P))=P" can be derived from the following three equations:

1. P or Q = Q or P,

2. (P or Q) or R = P or (Q or R),

3. not(not(P or Q) or not(P or not(Q))) = P.

With the development of new automated reasoning techniques, Argonne's software succeeded in solving the Robbins problem -- the answer is "yes." More than eight days of computer time was required to solve the problem.

Argonne-West to take part in Relay for Life 2000

Argonne-West's Women in Science and Technology will enter a team in the annual American Cancer Society's Relay for Life.

The Relay for Life is an overnight run to raise money to fight cancer and provide services to cancer patients and their families.

The run will take place at Idaho Falls High School's Ravsten Stadium Friday, July 21, starting at 6 p.m. and continuing until noon the next day.

A Cancer Survivors Lap opens the relay. In the evening, lighted luminaries decorated with the names of cancer survivors and those lost to cancer are placed around the track to light the way for the race.

Argonne-West team members listed below can be contacted for more information about the relay and will accept donations to the American Cancer Society.

Team members hope to collect the majority of donations by the end of June.

Volunteers needed for ANL-West picnic...

The 49th annual Argonne-West employee picnic will be held at Heise Park on Saturday, July 22.

Volunteers are needed to help make the picnic a success. Call JoAnn Merrill at ext. 3-7809, Kris Statham at ext. 3-7449 or Serena Rolfe at ext. 3-7079.

... and picnic at ANL-East

Volunteers are needed for this year's Argonne-East employee picnic, to be held Saturday, July 8, from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Argonne Park.

About 50 volunteers are needed to run the games, hand out prizes and get wet in the dunk tank. Employees can volunteer for an hour. In return, volunteers will get a free T-shirt.

The theme of this year's picnic is "Fun in the Sun." Activities will include a 30-foot climbing wall, a petting zoo and a nine-hole miniature golf course A band will also play a variety of music.

The employee picnic is sponsored by the Argonne Club and Sodexho Marriott. Admission is free for Argonne, University of Chicago and U.S. Department of Energy employees.

Employees interested in volunteering should call Stan Reinke (ECT-EE) at ext. 2-6957.

STEPs health program offered at Argonne-West

Argonne-West employees can take part in a state-of-the-art health program called STEPs, now being offered by the Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory Occupational Health Promotion Program.

STEPs is designed to assess an individual's current health status and help tailor a program that may include physical activity, nutrition, weight management, stress management, smoking cessation or strength training.

To begin, pick up a survey at the Argonne-West Medical Dispensary. Return the completed survey to the Occupational Medical Health Promotion Program at Mail Stop 3125.

Each participant will receive a summary hard copy report with recommendations for action. Various assessment tools and exercises will be used to measure progress; participants will be asked to submit them periodically.

Those completing the initial survey will receive a "Living Well" neck lanyard for carrying their security passes. Those who document and accomplish their goals will receive a wind shirt.

The STEPs program will continue through December, allowing each participant time to begin and proceed at his or her own pace.

For more information about this program, call Tamara Hobbes at ext. 3-7210 or Laurie Eldredge at ext. 2-7219.
