A major reorganization at Argonne-West is under way with the aim of strengthening conduct of operations and improving performance in the site's nuclear programs.
A new office of Environment, Safety and
Health, Quality Assurance and Safeguards and Security
Oversight will be directed by Gary Marshall. The office will
help ensure that line divisions are conducting activities in
accordance with applicable laws, regulations, DOE Orders
and Argonne policies.
Bob Phipps has been appointed director of
projects integration, reporting directly to John Sackett,
deputy associate laboratory director for Argonne-West. He will
be responsible for resolving priority conflicts to
meet specific project requirements. He will also
recommend changes as appropriate to achieve the most
efficient use of resources to meet project goals within
the approved cost and schedule constraints.
The current Operations Division has been
renamed the Facilities Division with Gary Lentz continuing
as director. To integrate the conduct of operations for
all major nuclear facilities, the responsibility for the
Transient Reactor Test Facility (TREAT), Neutron
Radiography Reactor, Zero Power Physics Reactor, Fuel
Manufacturing Facility, and the Fuel Assembly and Storage
Building, currently under the Engineering Division, will be
transferred to the Facilities Division.
New divisions formed
The current Engineering and Nuclear Technology divisions have been dissolved and two new divisions formed.
The new Engineering Technology Division will
have responsibility for all aspects of electrometallurgical
technology, the Experimental Breeder Reactor-II spent
fuel treatment project, the EBR-II plant closure project,
the remote treatment facility project and related
research and development. Bob Benedict has been
appointed director of the new division. Harold McFarlane and
Paul Henslee have been named associate division directors.
A newly reconstituted Nuclear Technology
Division will be responsible primarily for new nuclear
energy initiatives, including the DOE Office of Nuclear
Energy lead laboratory role, Generation IV reactor
concepts, international Nuclear Energy Research Initiative
and program activities sponsored by the DOE Office of
Defense Nuclear Nonproliferation. Pete Planchon has
been appointed director of the Nuclear Technology
Division. Doug Porter, Steven Aumeier and Doug Crawford
have been named associate division directors.
"I believe that this reorganization is important to strengthen our execution of the major programs and projects that we are now pursuing," said Argonne Interim Director Yoon Chang, "and to allow us to pursue more effectively future opportunities for Argonne-West and the whole of Engineering Research."
Human Resources will sponsor an "Adult/Elder Fair" Wednesday, Sept. 27, from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Argonne-East's Building 213 Cafeteria.
The fair will showcase local and state-wide organizations that provide information, care and assistance to the elderly: the American Association of Retired Persons, Illinois Secretary of State Elder Programs, Good Samaritan Hospital, Rush Personal Services, DuPage Senior Citizens Council and the Illinois Attorney General's office.
A raffle will be held, with the drawing set for 2 p.m. Winners need not be present. Prizes are:
First prize: A blood pressure monitor
Second prize: Two-speed Panasonic massager
Third, fourth and fifth prize: Movie tickets for
Loews theaters.
Two teams of Energy Systems Division employees have been honored for their contributions to environmental cleanup efforts.
Steven Miller and Michael Thompson were part of the team winning Secretary of the Army Environmental Awards for their clean-up efforts at Fort Campbell, Ky. They won in the Environmental Cleanup-Installation category.
As part of Fort Campbell's Installation Restoration Program, Miller and Thompson helped develop strong relationships among the clean-up contractors, the government and the community. They also helped Fort Campbell reduce the cost to clean the sites by $46.5 million, by proposing, among other things, to cover a landfill with vegetation rather than the typical cover.
Patrick L. Wilkey and R. Eric Zimmerman won awards from DOE's Office of Science and Technology for their contributions to the office's peer review program.
Wilkey and Zimmerman evaluated environmental remediation research activities being done by the Environmental Restoration and Waste Management department at DOE headquarters. They determined which research projects needed to be peer-reviewed by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. The team evaluated the projects quickly and in time for their recommendations to be put to use in the new fiscal year.
The Argonne Chess Club will hold lunchtime speed-chess tournaments open to all employees Wednesday, Sept. 6, 13, 20 and 27, in Argonne-East's Building 362, Room E188.
Entry fee is $1. All entry fees will be returned as prizes. The chess club will provide all needed equipment.
Games will be timed at five minutes each. The tournaments will use Swiss system pairings if more than six players enter; otherwise pairings will be round robin.
Registration ends at noon. Games will start at 12:05 p.m.

To schedule an appointment, call (630) 810-0346, ext. 143. Before each appointment, employees should fax their auto policy renewal statements to Craig Riddick at (630) 810-1628.
Darien police are planning to perform an aerial search near Argonne for village resident Xu Wang, a physician who disappeared more than a year ago.
Darien police have also used dogs to search areas near the laboratory.
According to the Chicago Sun-Times, Darien police are acting on the advice of Carol Pate, a psychic who has helped police in other searches.
