The University of Chicago has appointed Hermann A. Grunder, an internationally recognized nuclear and accelerator physicist, as director of Argonne, effective Nov. 1.
Grunder has been director of the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (Jefferson Laboratory), a U.S. Department of Energy nuclear physics research laboratory managed by the Southeastern Universities Research Association in Newport News, Va., since 1985. Previously he had served as deputy director of general sciences at Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory in California.
"I have made it my career to serve where I was most needed in the national lab system," Grunder said. "I am honored that the University of Chicago and the Department of Energy found my knowledge, experience and management style equal to the complex needs of a premier multi-program lab such as Argonne National Laboratory."
"Argonne is a national treasure that the University of Chicago is proud to manage, and we are delighted to have Hermann Grunder take its helm. He is a forceful, smart and dynamic scientific manager," said Don Michael Randel, President of the University of Chicago, which manages Argonne for the U.S. Department of Energy. "His accomplishments at Jefferson Lab and his extensive experience at Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory, where he forged close working relations with the University of California faculty, will serve him well at Argonne."
"Hermann Grunder is a highly respected leader in the scientific community and was instrumental in establishing and building the department's newest laboratory," said Secretary of Energy Bill Richardson. "His experience will serve him in good stead as he ensures that Argonne continues to make scientific discoveries and engineering advances that will benefit Americans for years to come."
Grunder has published extensively on nuclear physics, high-energy and heavy-ion accelerators, on applications of accelerators in medical research, and on accelerator technology. He received the Distinguished Associate Award from the U.S. Department of Energy in 1996, and the U.S. Senior Scientist Award from Germany's Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in 1979.
A native of Basel, Switzerland, Grunder holds a doctorate in experimental nuclear physics from the University of Basel and a master's degree in mechanical engineering from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in Germany.
Grunder succeeds Yoon I. Chang, associate laboratory director for engineering research, who has served as interim director since July 1, 1999.
The search for Argonne's director was conducted by a committee chaired by Richard Quisenberry, a member of the University of Chicago's Board of Governors for Argonne. Quisenberry is a retired vice president for science and engineering laboratories of DuPont.
Research Program Services-Supply at Argonne-West has changed some hours, staffing and procedures to better serve its customers.
The Building 781 General Stores counter will
be open from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily.
Starting Oct. 1, the Building 791 Electronics Stockroom will no longer
be staffed. Common-use stock (material used by the
general site population), will be moved to the Building
781 Stores Warehouse. Spare parts and specialized
common-use stock currently stocked in Building 791
will remain at their present location.
A minimum of 50 percent of incoming packages will be opened and
verified. All incoming PARIS awards and credit card orders will
be processed as follows:
* Material identified as property/sensitive, quality control or chemical items will be opened, inspected, and tagged prior to delivery.
* Material identified as mislabeled, visibly damaged or containing multiple awards will be opened and inspected prior to delivery.
Incoming material that is not opened will be
receipted from the packing list and delivered to the
requestor. The requisitioner is responsible for inspecting
the material and noting any discrepancies. Supply
should be notified via e-mail within 10 working days of receipt.
New furniture is not delivered by Supply. A
Plant Services Work Request is automatically initiated
for assembly and delivery to the recipient indicated in
the PARIS system. For a request number, call ext. 3-7482.
For more information, call Greg Wray (RPS) at extension 3-7498.
Representatives from the agencies that benefit from Argonne Combined Appeal contributions will be on hand to answer questions in Argonne-East's Building 213 Cafeteria Lobby Sept. 19, 21, 26 and 28 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Free popcorn will be available.
Visiting agencies include the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Crohn's and Colitis Foundation, American Cancer Society, March of Dimes, American Heart Association, Misericordia and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
The Argonne Combined Appeal, to be held in October, is the laboratory's annual campaign to benefit the Metropolitan Chicago United Way/Crusade of Mercy, United Way of Will County and 18 other charities.
More information on the campaign is available on the ACA home page.
All active employees at Argonne-East who have not yet completed the Job Hazard Questionnaire must do so by Friday, Sept. 29.
Completion of all the questionnaires is one of the lab's performance measures under the operating contract between the Department of Energy and the University of Chicago.
Special term appointees (STAs), no-pays, consultants, visitors, guests and site occupants may also need to fill out a new job hazard questionnaire; the criteria for these groups are in the Environment, Safety and Health Manual chapter 1-5. These groups should complete their questionnaires as soon as possible.
ESH has set up a special World Wide Web site to help employees understand all the questions.
Throughout September, links to the help page will be displayed prominently on the ESH home page and the Argonnet home page.
The full questionnaire will also be available online for employees who may need to print out a fresh copy.
The Guest House Restaurant at Argonne-East will not serve lunch Tuesday, Sept. 19, or Wednesday, Sept. 20, due to a special function.
Regular lunch service will resume Sept. 21.
Sodexho Marriott will open a new grill in the Advanced Photon Source Gallery Wednesday, Sept. 20, with a grand opening set for Monday, Oct. 2.
The grill will serve fast food from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. each evening.
Antique and classic car owners at Argonne-East are invited to showcase their cars Wednesday, Sept. 20, in the Building 360 north parking lot at lunchtime.
Cars on display will be 25 years old or older, of special interest, modified or of limited production. Cars will be on display from noon to 1 p.m, or as car owners' schedules permit. Everyone is invited to stop by and view the cars, and bring a camera. Car owners will be present to answer questions.
Rain date will be Wednesday, Sept. 27. For information, contact Clarence Clark (ASD) at (630) 553-9567 or Walter Czyz (IPNS) at (630) 553-6987.
David Tobias Goldman, 67, former administrator of the U.S. Department of Energy's Chicago Office, died of a heart attack Aug. 31 at Suburban Hospital, after collapsing at the Jewish Community Center in Rockville while playing handball.
Goldman was a physicist whose early career included work at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and General Electric. He was later deputy director of the Institute for Basic Standards at the National Bureau of Standards, headed the office of metric programs at the Commerce Department and then worked for the assistant secretary of Commerce. Until 1999, he was senior adviser on research management to deputy secretaries and undersecretaries of Energy.
Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth Goldman of Bethesda; five sons and eight grandchildren.
