Note: A Chemistry Division seminar has been added to the seminar listings.
Argonne's Women in Science and Technology (WIST) program will mark its tenth anniversary Friday, Nov. 17, with a reception at the Argonne Information Center. All interested employees whose schedules permit are invited to attend.
The reception, from 11 a.m. to noon, will feature members of WIST providing a brief review of WIST's history at Argonne and its current aims and goals. Advanced Photon Source Senior Scientific Director Gopal Shenoy will introduce Gabrielle Long, Maria Goeppert Mayer Distinguished Scholar for 2000. Argonne Director Hermann Grunder will cut the ribbon for the official opening of a WIST display in the exhibit area. Time for conversation and refreshments will follow.
Formally established in June 1990, Argonne's Women in Science and Technology Program supports the U.S. Department of Energy's commitment to recruit, retain and promote women to diversify and strengthen the scientific workforce. Argonne's WIST program conducts outreach and development activities to strengthen and fulfill that commitment.
Re-evaluation
As it reaches its first decade, Argonne WIST is formally re-evaluating its mission and goals and the effectiveness of the program to date, said Maryka Bhattacharyya (BIO), the current WIST Program Initiator (WPI). By its new, still evolving mission statement, the WIST Program at Argonne will:
Provide leadership and resources to Argonne
to promote the success of women in scientific and technical positions at
the laboratory and elsewhere.
Support and implement programs that
encourage, develop and utilize the full potential of women in
science and technology.
Promote movement toward equity at all levels within Argonne.
Argonne's WIST program comprises a WIST program initiator (WPI) and a WIST Steering Committee. The WPI is a research and development staff member supported by the laboratory for two years at 30 percent effort to:
Assist in the design and development of WIST Program activities.
Assist in recruiting and affirmative action
geared toward attracting and retaining technical staff from
under-utilized groups in cooperation with Human Resources.
Plan the program for the Annual Science
Careers in Search of Women Conference in cooperation with
the Division of Educational Programs and the
Diversity Program Office.
The WIST Steering Committee is chaired by a member of the Office of the Director -- currently Rich Valentin -- and has 12 regular members. The steering committee's job is to serve as a search committee for the WPI and the Argonne-West coordinator, guide the WPI on tasks and programmatic priorities and evaluate the effectiveness of the WPI position and the WIST Program.
In addition to the Annual Science Careers Conference, the WIST Program at Argonne has sponsored a WISTTALK listserv, a number of Women's Technical Symposia, Graduate School Mentoring Day, First Friday Forum for informal mentoring and brainstorming sessions on career development, and publication of a number of career guidance booklets for young women.
For more information, see the WIST Web page.
Alvin M. Weinberg, former director of Oak Ridge National Laboratory, will present "Does Nuclear Energy Have a Future?" at a Director's Special Colloquium Friday, Nov. 17 at 3 p.m. in the Building 402 Conference Center.
The colloquium is open to all employees whose schedules permit.
Weinberg began his career as part of the war-time team that developed the first nuclear reactor at the University of Chicago, where he obtained his bachelor's and master's degrees and Ph.D. From 1948 until 1973, Weinberg worked at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, first as research director, then laboratory director.
He has served on the President's Science Advisory Committee and as director of the Institute for Energy Analysis.
Weinberg's work in nuclear energy has earned him several awards, including the Enrico Fermi Award, the Harvey Prize and the Atoms for Peace Award.
To avoid W-2 form errors and delivery delays, employees at both Argonne-East and Argonne-West should check the accuracy of the name, address and social security number that appear on their check stubs.
Corrections should be sent to the Payroll Department as soon as possible, but no later than Wednesday, Dec. 6, to avoid W-2 form errors and delays. Division Human Resources representatives should be notified of any corrections. W-2 forms and earnings summaries will be mailed to employees' home addresses in January 2001.
HR representatives' names and telephone numbers can be found on page 6-9 of the Argonne telephone directory.
