Employees contribute $360,000 to Appeal

Argonne-East employees contributed more than $360,000 to the Argonne Combined Appeal (ACA) 2000 campaign.

The donations go to 18 charitable organizations and to many more under the umbrella of the United Way Crusade of Mercy and United Way of Will County.

"The Argonne contributions are valued by these agencies. For some of them, Argonne is their single largest contributor," ACA co-chair Mary Goodkind (ESH) said.

Money will be distributed to participating agencies over the next 12 months. "Argonne employees have traditionally been generous, even in tough times," said ACA Co-Chair Frank Vivio (DEP). In Chicago's top 200 companies, the average participation rate was 38 percent in 2000, according to United Way spokesperson Phil Donnelly. More than 60 percent of Argonne employees contributed to ACA in 2000.

While the percentage of employees contributing was down slightly in 2000, the total amount contributed increased 6.5 percent over 1999. Individual giving rose from an average of $203 in 1999 to $211 in 2000. The average Chicago-area United Way donation was $206.

The number of employees contributing one or one and one-half day's pay increased this year to 647.

The ACA is organized by a committee of Argonne volunteers that meets year-round. For more information on the 2001 campaign, contact the 2001 co-chairs: Evelyn Brown (OPA), eabrown@anl.gov or ext. 2-5510; or Bob Ferry (AOD), bferry@aps.anl.gov or ext. 2-9495.

The awards recognize outstanding technical or scientific achievement or a distinguished record of achievements by an Argonne employee.

Statements of 250 words or less citing the nominee's achievement or record should be submitted to the laboratory director. Fifteen copies are required.

Deadline for initial nominations is Monday, Feb. 5.

After internal review, the laboratory director will notify nominators of the acceptance of the nominations for submission to the University of Chicago, and additional support materials will be requested.

High school students
invited to 'Saturday Science'

Argonne is launching a new multimedia lecture series, "Saturday Science at Argonne," to encourage high-school students -- especially girls and minorities -- to consider science or engineering as a career choice and to advance scientific curiosity in young people.

Sponsored by Argonne's Women in Science and Technology (WIST) and the Division of Educational Programs (DEP), this test program will run one Saturday morning each month for four consecutive months from January through April, in Argonne-East's Bldg. 402 Auditorium. The pilot program is by invitation only. If it is well received, the program could expand to seven lectures in the fall.

During the test run, several of Argonne's women scientists will lead presentations of ongoing science and research topics. They will speak on frontiers in science, their research topics and how they are trying to solve real problems. Lectures will be interactive, with demonstrations, video clips, discussions, hands-on experiments and problem-solving sessions designed to pique the interest of selected high-school freshmen and sophomores from Chicago area schools.

The program's designers -- Marcia Torres (ESH-HP), Carole B. Szpunar (EEST/DIS), Tijana Rajh (CHM), and DEP Director Harold Myron -- hope students will acquire significant insight about the role of science in their lives.

The program is limited to four high-school students per interested school with at least two girls attending, except in the case of all-male schools. Participating students are expected to attend all four Saturday morning sessions.

Featured topics and speakers scheduled to date include:

Physics, Jan. 20 -- "Particle Accelerators: Big Machines for Micro Science" by Katherine Harkay (ASD).

Chemistry, Feb. 10 -- "Frontiers in Chemistry" by Marion Thurnauer, Kathleen Carrado Gregar and Lynda Soderholm (all CHM).

History, March 10 -- "Women in Science" and "The National Laboratories" by Caroline Herzenberg (DIS) and Carole B. Szpunar (EEST/DIS).

Structural Biology, April 14 -- "Using Crystallography to Determine Protein Structure" by Lisa Keefe (APS-Users) and others.

Seminars begin at 9 a.m. and end at about 11:30 a.m.

For more information, or for information on volunteering for the fall series, call Karen DeLara-Menozzi (DEP) at ext. 2-4495.

ESH Division readies for new ergonomics rules

As a new national ergonomics standard goes into effect Jan. 16, Argonne's Environment, Safety and Health Division is taking several steps to prepare for these changes, including updating and tripling the number of upcoming computer-user ergonomics classes.

The new U.S. Occupation Safety and Health Administration (OHSA) ergonomic standard is intended to reduce the number and severity of musculoskeletal disorders caused by exposure to risk factors in the workplace. Most of all U.S. workplace injuries are related to ergonomic problems, according to OSHA.

In addition to increasing ergonomics classes, ESH will present details on the new standard and the laboratory's plans for compliance at a special meeting for division safety coordinators and other interested employees in the near future.

ESH has provided guidance in the Environment, Safety and Health Manual Chapter 7-5, "Ergonomics and the Prevention of Musculoskeletal Disorders," to cover most of the issues of the standard.

Detailed information on ergonomics can be found on the ESH ergonomics website. The OSHA standard itself and supporting documentation are also online or in the Federal Register (29CFR 1910.900) in the Building 203 Library.

ESH continues to provide ergonomic work evaluations and consultations prior to the purchase of ergonomic work equipment.

For more information, call Carol Giles (ESH-IHS) at ext. 2-3427.

Bodybilt chair demo planned

Several styles of Bodybilt ergonomic chairs will be demonstrated Tuesday, Jan. 16, in Argonne-East's Building 202, Room E126 (follow the signs to ESH-Training), from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Vendors will demonstrate chair features and help employees select an appropriate chair. No appointments are necessary.

Bodybilt chair users who would like a refresher on the chairs' features or those in the market for a new chair are welcome.

Ergonomics classes can help
prevent repetitive stress injuries

ESH recommends Computer User Ergonomics classes for employees who work with computers for four hours or more per day. Upcoming classes will be held:

Tuesday, Jan. 16, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.

Tuesday, Feb. 13, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.

Wednesday, Feb. 28, from 9:45 to 11:45 a.m.

All classes will be held in Argonne-East's Building 202, Room B169. Register through a Training Management System representative. A special session will be held in Argonne's Denver offices Thursday, Feb. 1.
