The American Physical Society has awarded fellowships to Argonne scientists Geoffrey T. Bodwin (HEP) and Efim Gluskin (APS-XFD).
Election to fellowship is recognition by one's peers of significant advances in physics knowledge through original research. The American Phyical society limits fellowship to no more than one half of one percent of the current membership each year.
Bodwin was recognized "for definitive contributions
to the systematic understanding of heavy quarkonia in
terms of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD), to the proof of
factorization in QCD, and to the understanding of chirality
in lattice gauge theory."
Bodwin holds a Ph.D. from Cornell University and has written more than 40 scientific papers. He joined the High Energy Physics Division in 1983 and has served as spokesman of the HEP Theory Group twice.
Bodwin's work has centered on Quantum Chromodynamics, the fundamental theory of the strong interactions of particles and quantum fields. His work on factorization in QCD provided the theoretical cornerstone for all present-day calculations of hadron-hadron collisions at large momentum transfer. He is cited for introducing a framework for computing heavy-quarkonium properties in terms of QCD. This framework predicted new, unanticipated quarkonium production mechanisms that resolved serious discrepancies between models and data from Fermilab's Tevatron.
Bodwin has also made a number of important contributions to the formulation of lattice gauge theories of chiral particles, such as the standard model of the weak and electromagnetic particle interactions.
Gluskin's citation recognizes "his
contributions to the development, construction and
characterization of insertion devices for third-generation
synchrotron radiation sources and free-electron lasers."
Third-generation synchrotron radiation sources like Argonne's Advanced Photon Source (APS) employ insertion devices to produce a range of X-rays up to those of the hard (highly penetrating) variety. Insertion devices are linear arrays of permanent magnets with alternating polarity used to greatly enhance the X-rays produced by the APS.
Gluskin is director of the APS Experimental Facilities Division, and has been at Argonne since 1990.
"Preventing Recreational Sports Injuries" will be the topic of a short seminar at Argonne-West Tuesday, Feb. 6, in the Building 710 Conference Room. The half-hour presentation will be begin at 1 p.m. and be repeated at 2:15 p.m.
Presenter Brad Snedden will examine the pitfalls associated with common recreational activities, and discuss shoes and walking and running styles.
The seminar is sponsored by the Occupational Medical Health Promotion Program. For more information, call (208) 526-1200.
Argonne-West employees may no longer park at the Ernst Building in Idaho Falls, starting Monday, Jan. 22.
The owner of the building will post signs indicating violation of city ordinance. Unauthorized vehicles parked there will be subject to towing at the owner's expense.
As an alternative, the east end of Shelley New Sweden lot will be expanded to provide additional parking.
For more information, call ext. 3-7661.
Employees with security clearances must complete required DOE refresher briefings by Wednesday, Jan. 31.
The 2000 briefing is available online.
Employees who do not complete the refresher briefing may have their clearances suspended.
For more information, call Sylvia Aguilar (OSS-SSP) at ext. 2-5734.
"Soups and Stews" are on the curriculum for the next series of cooking classes taught by Argonne Guest House Executive Chef Chris Kaminsky.
The popular classes will be held the evenings of Feb. 12, 15 and 19, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Argonne-East Guest House.
Participants will be able to taste the results.
Class sizes are limited. Registration is $23 per person. Payment by cash, check or charge is due with registration. Send by mail or drop off in person at the Argonne Guest House.
For more information, call Kathy at ext. 5-2006.
Nominations are being sought for the 2000 University of Chicago Awards for Distinguished Performance at Argonne.
The awards recognize outstanding technical or scientific achievement or a distinguished record of achievements by an Argonne employee.
Statements of 250 words or less citing the nominee's achievement or record should be submitted to the laboratory director. Fifteen copies are required.
Deadline for initial nominations is Monday, Feb. 5.
After internal review, the laboratory director will notify nominators of the acceptance of the nominations for submission to the University of Chicago, and additional support materials will be requested.

In response to last December's Argonne News article, three Argonne engineers have responded to the Roosevelt High School Robotics Club plea for technical assistance in a national robot-construction contest. But a computer animation expert is still needed.
The students want to create a 30-second animation as a part of their presentation at the national contest, and need help with the sophisticated software. For more information, call (773) 463-3073 or send e-mail to jamalno2@aol.com.
The students have about a month to build the machine before the first round of competition begins.
Electronics and Computing Technologies will offer a variety of computer software training classes at Argonne-East in January, February and March.
Full class descriptions and schedules are available at http://www.anl.gov/ECT/courses/. For more information about enrollment procedures, contact Diane Cavazos (ECT) at ext. 2-7153 or dkcavazos@anl.gov.
Unless otherwise specified, classes will be held in Building 221, Room A142, cost $195 and are limited to 10.
