Six to receive university's highest honor

Five Argonne employees and one retiree will receive University of Chicago Distinguished Performance Awards at a ceremony at Argonne-East Thursday, July 12.

The ceremony will begin at 3:30 p.m. in Argonne-East's Building 213 Cafeteria.

The awards recognize achievements or leadership by employees engaged in scientific and technical activities. Awardees receive a certificate, a medal and a check for $3,000.

Honorees will include:

Paul A. Benioff (PHY-retired), who will receive a special Distinguished Performance Award for his pioneering work which first proved that quantum computing was a theoretical possibility. Following his work, it was established that this path offered the opportunity to overcome present limitations in computing and communications. His initial proof led to the present worldwide scientific effort to develop an operating quantum computer.

Andrzej Joachimiak (BIO), for scientific leadership that has placed him in a position of world leadership in the field of structural genomics and helped develop Argonne's Structural Biology Center into the foremost facility for solving the structure of novel proteins. In addition, Joachimiak has made significant contributions to the understanding of the structure and function of proteins, especially the action of transcriptional regulators and molecular chaperones, which regulate many cellular activities.

Harold McFarlane (ENT-AW), for outstanding and sustained contributions to many Engineering Research programs and initiatives during his 28-year career.

McFarlane has a long record of technical accomplishments and is well-known in the international community for his ability to develop and employ innovative analytical techniques, coupled with a full understanding of the fundamental analytic techniques required in core design.

McFarlane led the preparation of environmental assessments for treatment of EBR-II spent fuel; work that was vitally important to the future of Argonne's programs in Engineering Research.

Jorge Moré (MCS) for his outstanding technical contributions and leadership in the field of numerical optimization. His work has provided a fundamental understanding of algorithm behavior and resulted in state-of-the-art practical implementations that reduce the number of calculations computers must perform to achieve the desired results. Moré has also been at the forefront of computer science research in this area, leading the incorporation of automatic differentiation tools and parallel computing technology into optimization software. His most highly regarded software projects are MINPACK, a collection now considered standard benchmarks, and NEOS, which enables users to solve optimization problems over the Internet.

Emil Trakhtenberg and Isaac Vasserman (both XFD) for their internationally recognized work on insertion devices and vacuum chambers for insertion devices at the Advanced Photon Source (APS). Insertion devices are magnets that provide the primary sources of X-rays at the APS. Innovative instrumentation developed by Trakhtenberg and Vasserman had a major impact on APS performance and laid the foundation for the next generation of synchrotron radiation sources.

Shuttle bus to university now running

A free shuttle bus is now in operation between Argonne and the University of Chicago, part of a broader effort to promote a deeper partnership and sense of community between the laboratory and the university.

Ridership was increasing over the first few days of the pilot program, which began June 11. About a dozen riders took the morning run on the shuttle's second day of operation.

The pilot program will end Sept. 21.

At Argonne the bus stops at the front entrance of buildings 221, 223, 202, 212, 205 (east entrance) 401 Plaza and 360. At the University of Chicago, the bus stops at the southwest corner of East 57th Street and Ellis Avenue under the sky bridge connecting Kersten Physics Teaching Center with the Research Institutes. The full schedule is online.

Visitors need pass

All visitors to the laboratory must have appropriate review and approval before entering.

For information about site access by a foreign national, call the Foreign Visit and Assignment Office at ext. 2-1142. For information regarding obtaining site access for a U. S. citizen, call ext. 2-5755. More information is also available on the Shuttle web page.

Music lovers invited to 'Rock In Argonne' festival

On Sunday, June 24, Argonne Park will be jamming to the sounds of the first "Rock In Argonne" (RIA) fest. The all-day, open-mike music fest will begin at noon and last until 9 p.m.

"It's going to be great," said Alex Deriy (PHY), one of the fest's organizers. "At least three bands are going to be there. We encourage all the music lovers at Argonne to come and have a good time. People can chill out and listen to some physicists jam."

The names of the bands already scheduled to perform will remain a surprise, Deriy said. In fact, some of the names don't event exist yet. "Some bands will be born at the fest," he added. The invited bands will perform 5 to 10-song sets, Deriy said. The stage will then be open for others to jam all day long.

There is no particular music format, all styles are welcome. Argonne employees are encouraged to bring their instruments and bandmates and perform as many songs as they like. A P.A. system, microphones and the drums will be provided by the organizers.

This first RIA-festival is organized by music enthusiasts from the ATLAS accelerator operations group. They will also provide gas grills for those who want to barbecue.

Beer will be available for purchase from Marriott.

For more information, contact Eric Lindert and Alex Deriy at ext. 2-4115 or eric.lindert @physics.org. and alexderiy@ yahoo.com .

Safety talk set for June 21

Speaker Charlie Morecraft will visit Argonne-East Thursday, June 21 for a series of talks in the Building 402 Auditorium.

His talk, "Safety, Everyone's Responsibility," emphasizes the need for following safety procedures and taking responsibility for personal safety.

Morecraft was severely burned in an industrial accident and suffered years of agonizing pain. Since then he has worked to motivate workers and management to turn a possible adversarial relationship into a unified team effort to establish a safe work environment.

Morecraft's presentation will be held from 8:45-10:15 a.m. and repeated from 2:15-3:45 p.m. All Argonne, DOE and contractor employees whose schedules permit are invited to attend.

Registration is requested, but not required. To register, contact a Training Management System representative and register for EQO105, "Safety Awareness."

Copies of Morecraft's videos, "Remember Charlie" and "Office Safety: It's Not Just About You," are available from Eddi Langenberg (ESH-SME) at ext. 2-4903.
