Fermi stamp to be unveiled at ANL-East Oct. 1

The U.S Postal Service and Argonne will hold an official Second-Day Unveiling Ceremony for a new stamp featuring the late physicist Enrico Fermi in Argonne-East's Building 213 Cafeteria at 11:30 a.m., Monday, Oct. 1.

Immediately after the ceremony, employees will be able to buy the stamps. Staff from the Argonne Post Office will cancel envelopes bearing the stamps with a postmark specially designed for the occasion.

Fermi is considered Argonne's first director. The stamp honors the physicist's accomplishments in light of the 100th anniversary of his birth, which was Sept. 29, 1901, in Rome, Italy.

The Argonne ceremony follows a First-Day Unveiling Ceremony that will be held Saturday, Sept. 29, at the University of Chicago.

The stamp was produced in a rather roundabout way. Maury Goodman (HEP) and the Users Executive Committee (UEC) at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory originally came up with the idea of a stamp to commemorate the laboratory's research and the construction of its new Main Injector facility as a community outreach effort. Goodman and the UEC eventually made a more concrete goal of coming out with a stamp honoring Fermi's 100th anniversary.

"In the past, there have been stamps involving science or scientists, although most of the stamps are foreign," said Goodman, a member of the UEC.

Symposium to celebrate Fermi's
contributions to nuclear power

A symposium at Argonne-East Friday, Sept. 28, will celebrate the 100th birthday of Enrico Fermi and his contribution to the development of nuclear power.

The symposium will begin at 8:30 a.m. in the Building 402 Conference Center, with remarks by Argonne Director Hermann Grunder.

The schedule includes presentations on Fermi's life and accomplishments by his colleagues, and several panel discussions on the development of reactor technology.

Following the program at 5:30 p.m. will be a reception with cash bar and dinner at the Argonne Guest House. A round table discussion will follow dinner, with historical reminiscences as the order of the day; all present are invited to take part.

ACA asks employees
to give their 'fair share'

The Argonne Combined Appeal (ACA) Committee is encouraging Argonne-East employees to donate one day's pay, called a "Fair Share," or one and one-half day's pay, called a "Fair Share Plus," to the campaign this year.

"Of course, any amount is gratefully accepted," said ACA Co-Chair Deana Kinzler (UPD).

The Argonne Combined Appeal, which runs through October, is the laboratory's annual giving campaign.

"More than 20 percent of the ACA contributors give either a day's pay or one and one-half day's pay. We want this to grow to 25 percent," explained Kinzler. "For most people it's just a few dollars more than they are currently giving," she added.

For individuals making $40,000, their fair share would be $153.85. By deducting per monthly paycheck that would be $12.82; for biweekly, it would be $5.92 per pay period. If the same person pledged to give one and one-half day's pay -- a Fair Share Plus -- that would be $230.77; $19.23 per monthly pay period and $8.88 bi-weekly.

Employees may contribute to one or more of the 20 participating agencies in accordance with each employee's circumstances and desires. Either payroll deductions or one-time cash contributions are acceptable.

More information can be found on the Argonne Combined Appeal Web page.

Fact sheets on research now online

A set of 30 new fact sheets about Argonne research and other programs is now online.

The fact sheets accompany the posters currently on display in the Building 201 lobby, a sampling of Argonne's recent research-and-development highlights.

"Argonne scientists and engineers do a lot of top-notch research, which is worth sharing with sponsors, friends, neighbors and the public," said Deputy Director Beverly Hartline. "These fact sheets can help everyone do that.

"In the winter," she said, "we plan to request nominations of topics for a new set of posters to refresh the lobby display and fact sheets."

Valian to discuss
progress of women in science

Virginia Valian, professor of psychology at Hunter College, will present "Why So Slow? The Advancement of Women in Science" at a Director's Special Colloquium Tuesday, Sept. 25.

The talk will begin at 3 p.m. in Argonne-East's Building 362 Auditorium. All employees whose schedules permit are invited to attend.

Valian is the author of "Why So Slow? The Advancement of Women" (MIT Press, 1998). The book explores the disparity in the professional advancement of men and women.

Parking next to buildings prohibited

Cars may no longer be parked next to buildings at Argonne-East, except for vehicles with handicap identification.
