Materials Science Division scientists Igor Aronson, Juan Carlos Campuzano and Boyd Veal have been elected to fellowship in the American Physical Society.
Election to fellowship honors significant contributions to physics through research and publication, or significant applications of physics to science and technology.
Fellowship is a competitive honor. Only one-half of one percent of the membership can receive the honor each year. This year 33 fellows were elected in condensed matter and materials physics.
Aronson was recognized for important
theoretical contributions to the dynamics of systems far from equilibrium -- systems whose motion
fluctuates randomly in time -- and for the application of novel methods to nonlinear dynamics of
condensed matter systems.
Campuzano made outstanding
contributions to the understanding of high-temperature cuprate superconductors by use of angle
resolved photoemission spectroscopy.
Veal was honored for his photoemission
studies of transition and actinide metal compounds and adding to the understanding of the materials
properties of the yttrium-barium-copper-oxide family of high temperature superconductors.
MSD's materials scientists, physicists and chemists develop new materials or improve the performance of old materials through collaborative research on a variety of problems. Current materials of interest include superconductors, magnetics, ferroelectrics, organic crystals and diamond coatings.
Argonne Club has several events planned at Argonne-East in the coming months.
A Spring Fling Party will be held
Thursday, March 21, from 4:30 - 8 p.m. in the Building 213 Cafeteria. There will be a DJ and door
prizes; $3 cover.
Discount tickets are available for the
Kane County Cougars baseball game at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, May 31, at Elfstrom Stadium in Geneva.
Tickets are $7 and will go on sale in the Building 213 Cafeteria in the near future.
The annual employee picnic will be
held Saturday, July 13, in Argonne Park from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. The picnic activities will be
free. Food will be provided for purchase by Sodexho. Volunteers will receive a free T-shirt. E-mail
Stan Reinke (ECT) at
sareinke@anl.gov for more information about volunteering.
More information about Argonne Club activities is available online.
Chicago area high school students put their physics, engineering and flag-waving skills to the test at Argonne's seventh annual Rube Goldberg Machine Contest Feb. 15.
The "Wildcats," a team from Plainfield High School, Plainfield, won the contest, held at Chicago Children's Museum on Navy Pier. Second place was won by Minooka High School, Minooka, and third place went to Glenbrook South High School, Glenview.
Using common objects such as mousetraps, marbles and junk salvaged from garages and basements, the students built machines that took at least 20 steps to secure, raise and wave a national flag. Rube Goldberg machine contests are inspired by Reuben Lucius Goldberg, whose cartoons combined simple household items into complex devices to perform trivial tasks.
The Wildcats received a traveling trophy to display until the 2003 contest. They will take a tour of Argonne and have lunch with Argonne scientists. In addition, each team member and the team's faculty advisor received a copy of the "Rube Goldberg Inventions" book of 30 Rube Goldberg postcards and an Argonne Rube Goldberg Machine Contest T-shirt.
The first-place team will also have the opportunity to demonstrate their winning machine at Argonne-East on the day of their tour and at Purdue University's national collegiate Rube Goldberg Machine Contest Saturday, April 6.
The top three teams will have the opportunity to compete in the fourth annual Illinois State Championship Rube Goldberg Machine Contest to be held Saturday, May 4, at the Chicago Children's Museum. They will compete against the top three teams from the high school Rube Goldberg Machine Contest at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign's Engineering Open House.
Information about the Argonne Rube Goldberg Machine Contest is available on the Web.
Argonne's Division of Educational Programs and Office of Public Affairs sponsor the event in collaboration with Chicago Children's Museum and the National Rube Goldberg Machine Contest, held annually at Purdue University. The event is licensed by Rube Goldberg, Inc.
An interactive program for family caregivers will be held at Argonne-East Wednesday, March 6.
The program will give employees an opportunity to talk about their own family caregiving issues, and receive personal attention and guidance from eldercare expert Joy Loverde.
The discussion will include balancing life and work responsibilities and handling the emotions of family caregiving.
Loverde is author of the best-seller "The Complete Eldercare Planner."
The program will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Space is limited; to register, and for location information, call Fran Perri (HR) at ext. 2-2989 or fperri@anl.gov.
Laboratory organizations can now access shared computing resources and new Windows 2000 features through the Argonne Windows 2000 enterprise network.
Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) 2000 certified professionals in Electronics and Computing Technology are available to help plan and implement the move to the new environment.
Based upon user requirements, an organization's current domain can be converted into an organizational unit of "anl.gov," or ECT can design and deploy a child domain for a division. ECT experts can help division administrators weigh the advantages and disadvantages of each solution.
ECT can tailor the migration project to meet an organization's needs. For example, work may be performed on a consulting basis, as needed, or ECT can take responsibility for the complete migration. ECT can also assist with Windows 2000 Pro upgrades, installations and secure configuration of client desktops.
Because licenses for Windows 2000 Pro are covered under the Lab-wide Microsoft Campus Agreement, clients may upgrade now with no need to purchase any licenses. Contact the ECT Client Computing Help Desk at ext. 2-6969 for more information.
The Argonne Engineering Golf League is seeking golfers for the 2002 season.
The league plays Wednesdays at the Carriage Greens Golf Club in Darien, teeing off from 3:30 - 5:30 p.m. The league begins April 10 and ends Aug. 31 with an 18-hole event, dinner and awards.
All interested golfers are welcome to bring their lunches to an organization meeting Tuesday, March 26, from noon to 1 p.m. in Building 401, Room A1100. Door prizes will be awarded.
For more information, see the league's Web site or contact Marge Collins at ext. 2-3013 or mcollins@anl.gov, or Phil Rash at ext. 2-8114 or prash@anl.gov.
The intersection of Westgate and Lemont roads can be hazardous enough at 5 p.m., but some drivers leaving Argonne-East are adding to the risk by pulling out into the oncoming lane to bypass the line of cars stopped for the light.
The area is a no-passing zone, and Security has seen several near-misses. Security can and does issue tickets to employees who attempt this maneuver, and sends a copy of the ticket to that employee's division director.
Early registration for Joliet Junior College summer classes will be offered Monday, March 11, at Argonne-East.
College representatives will be available in the Human Resources offices in Building 201 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. to register students for summer 2002 classes.
Employees must bring completed and approved educational assistance forms (ANL-89) to the registration.
Call Betty Iwan at ext. 2-3410 for more information.
Sodexho will host a book sale Thursday, March 7, in Argonne-East's Building 213 Cafeteria.
The sale will take place from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and will feature books, games and toys. All items will be sold at discounted prices. Cash, checks and credit cards will be accepted.
