Colloquium to honor memory of Joe Asbury

A Director's Special Colloquium in memory of Joseph Asbury, former deputy to the Argonne director, will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 23, in Argonne-East's Building 402 Auditorium.

The speaker will be John H. (Jack) Gibbons, president of Resource Strategies and former science advisor to the president. He will speak on "Global Science and Technology Challenges for the 21st Century."

Gibbons has been special advisor to the U.S. undersecretary of state for global affairs, assistant to the president for science and technology, director of the U.S. Office of Science and Technology Policy and director of the Congressional Office of Technology Assessment. He began his career as a physicist at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

He has written many articles on national science and technology policy, energy and environmental policy, energy supply and demand, conservation, resource management and nuclear physics. His most recent book is "This Gifted Age: Science and Technology at the Millennium."

Joseph G. Asbury, retired deputy to the Argonne director, died Aug. 17, 2001, at the age of 63.

Asbury worked at Argonne for 31 years. A physicist by training, he joined Argonne as a staff scientist in the High Energy Physics Division. He worked in the Energy and Environmental Sciences Division as a senior economist before joining the Office of the Director in 1983.

As deputy to the director, he was in charge of strategic planning for the laboratory. Asbury was a champion of recruiting women and minorities to science careers, and served as chair of the steering committee of Argonne's Women in Science and Technology program.

April 16 colloquium highlights
Glenn Seaborg's life and times

Eric Seaborg, son of Nobel Laureate Glenn Seaborg, will speak on his father's "Adventures in the Atomic Age" at a Director's Special Colloquium Tuesday, April 16, starting at 2 p.m. in the Building 402 Conference Center.

Eric Seaborg will discuss the choices, timing and circumstances that led to his father's success, discuss his father's encounters with U.S. presidents and share some personal insights.

Eric Seaborg collaborated with his father on his recently published autobiography, "Adventures in the Atomic Age: From Watts to Washington."

A physicist, Glenn Seaborg worked on the Manhattan Project, and served for a decade as chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission. He won a Nobel Prize for the discovery of plutonium and other elements -- including seaborgium -- and advised presidents from Harry S. Truman to George H. W. Bush.

Employees can query top management directly

"Ask the Directorate" -- a new way for employees to ask senior Argonne management direct questions about the laboratory's operations, policy, strategy, mission, budget, and goals -- will debut Monday, April 8. Employees should continue to refer job- or workplace-specific questions to their immediate supervisors.

Employees may submit questions to askthedirectorate@anl.gov or fax them to 2-5274. Only questions that include the name of the questioner and contact information, such as e-mail address, office extension or fax number, will be answered.

An appropriate member of the Argonne Directorate -- Argonne Director Hermann Grunder, Deputy Director Beverly Hartline, Deputy to the Director Don Joyce or Chief Operating Officer Mike Derbidge -- will answer each question, and the answer will be sent directly to the employee.

In addition, the Argonne News will periodically print selected responses, and all answers will be posted on the Web. Questioners will remain anonymous in the Argonne News and on the Web.

A link to the Ask the Directorate Web page, which includes an e-mail link for submitting questions, is on the Argonnet home page.

Administrative professionals to be honored

Argonne will celebrate the contributions of its administrative professionals with events at both Argonne-West and Argonne-East.

At Argonne-West, Administrative Professionals Day activities will begin at 8 a.m. Monday, April 22, when that site's administrative professionals can attend a breakfast in Idaho Falls at the Shilo Inn. John Sackett, deputy associate laboratory director for Argonne-West, will discuss the Idaho site's activities. At 11 a.m. Kay Winner and Alice Lee (both OTD) will give a presentation to the Argonne-West secretarial employees.

At Argonne-East, Suzanne Benson will present "Communication: Steps That Can Be Taken to Make You Even More Effective" Wednesday, April 24, in the Building 213 Cafeteria. A free buffet breakfast will be served at 8 a.m. and the program will start at 8:45 a.m. All Argonne-East secretaries and clerical employees are invited to attend.

Benson is assistant professor of Northeastern Illinois University's Human Resource Development program. She has consulted with business, groups and organizations, and has made presentations nationally and internationally on human resource management and development topics.

For more information, contact Pat Canaday (OPA) at ext. 2-5562.

Team honored for fuel-cell tech-transfer efforts

A research team in Argonne's Chemical Technology (CMT) Division has received an award for helping move fuel-cell technology closer to the marketplace.

The Federal Laboratory Consortium (FLC) Award for Excellence in Technology Transfer recognizes the team's work in transferring CMT's autothermal fuel reforming catalyst for fuel cells. The group will receive a plaque at a banquet ceremony at the Art Center in Little Rock, Ark.

The autothermal reforming catalyst is the key component of a fuel processor that can efficiently convert methanol, ethanol, natural gas, gasoline and diesel fuel into hydrogen, which can then be fed to a fuel cell to produce electricity. The processor will allow fuel-cell-powered cars to run on conventional fuels, rather than on pure hydrogen, and will only be the size of a two-liter soda bottle, making it much easier to integrate into cars than older, larger processors.

This technology transfer effort has already resulted in the creation of a joint-venture company and the investment of several millions of dollars in commercialization. Successful commercialization of the technology will result in clean, efficient fuel cells for home, business and portable power applications.

Each year the FLC, which comprises more than 600 federal laboratories and centers, recognizes federal laboratory employees who have done outstanding work transferring laboratory-developed technology. Argonne has won 21 awards since the program began in 1984.
