    Distinguished Russian scientist to head
    Argonne's human genome research

Andrei Mirzabekov, one of Russia's most distinguished scientists, will head Argonne's human genome research project.

Mirzabekov is joining Argonne as part of a joint research project signed in Moscow between Argonne and the Russian Academy of Sciences' W.A. Engelhardt Institute of Molecular Biology. Mirzabekov, director of the Engelhardt Institute, will divide his time equally between the two organizations.

The joint project aims at developing a new super-efficient biochip to decode the human genome and let scientists read nature's instructions for building and operating the human body.

If successful, the chip could lead to improved ways to diagnose and treat human genetic diseases such as cancer, Alzheimer's disease, and multiple sclerosis. It could also help decode animal genomes, leading to improved veterinary diagnostics and treatments or to new livestock breeds with more meat and less fat.

Mirzabekov, 57, is a member of the Russian and European academies of science. He is the co-founder of the Russia's Human Genome Project and vice-president of the International Human Genome Organization. He is the past winner of a number of prestigious Soviet national prizes, as well as the Gregor Mendel Medal of the German Academy of Leopoldina.

The author of numerous scientific publications, Mirzabekov has carried out research at the Medical Research Council, Laboratory of Molecular Biology, Cambridge, England, and at Harvard University and the California Institute of Technology in the United States.

The U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Health and Environmental Research is providing $1.8 million to fund the project in its first year.

`Extension 720 radio show to host
    Schriesheim, Drucker, Moncton

"Science" at Argonne will be the topic of the "Extension 720" radio program on Monday, Jan. 9.

Argonne Director Alan Schriesheim and Associate Laboratory directors David Moncton and Harvey Drucker will be interviewed by host Milton Rosenberg, University of Chicago Psychology Professor.

The two-hour talk show begins at 9 p.m. on WGN, 720 AM.

Public meeting on wildlife plan set for Jan. 11

Members of nearby communities will have an opportunity to comment on a proposed wildlife management plan for Argonne at a public meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 11.

The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. at the Willowbrook Holiday Inn, 7800 Kingery Highway (Rt. 83), Willowbrook.

An environmental assessment of the proposed wildlife management plan, prepared by the U.S. Department of Agriculture for DOE, has been released in draft form for public comment. It recommends a strategy of "integrated wildlife damage management" at Argonne to reduce damage to the site's environment and safety hazards to employees

Part of the USDA's management strategy includes reducing the white-tailed and fallow deer population to 20 per square mile for each species.

USDA surveys of the site found at least 453 white-tailed deer on the site, about nine times the ideal level. The European fallow, or "white," deer number at least 139 per square mile. These numbers are conservative, according to the USDA; many deer are usually hidden during a census. Each population would be maintained at the recommended level to "assure a healthy, balanced ecosystem between Argonne-East and Waterfall Glen Forest Preserve," according to the assessment.

Proven management methods and techniques, both lethal and non-lethal, would be used to reduce deer populations. Exclusive use of non-lethal techniques would not eliminate environmental damage caused by wildlife, and would allow the damage to continue and possibly increase, according to the study. Management techniques would be species-specific to reduce the risk of harm to other kinds of animals.

Under the plan, other wildlife species would be managed as necessary when they cause public safety hazards, environmental degradation, or damage to laboratory facilities.

    Foster elected to board
    of science writer's group

Catherine Foster (OPA), director of science and technology communications, has been elected to the associate board of the National Association of Science Writers.

The four-member associate board represents science writers in public relations, and helps steer and govern the association.

"I couldn't be more pleased if I'd won a Pulitzer Prize," said Foster, whose two-year term began Jan. 1.

The 1,800-member association was begun in 1934 to "foster the dissemination of accurate information regarding science through all media normally devoted to informing the public."

Seminar is a (healthy) family affair

Argonne's Employee Assistance Program will hold a seminar on "Building Healthy Family Relations: Through the Life Cycle" on Tuesday, Jan. 10.

The seminar will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Building 203 auditorium. The presenter is Laurel L. Humphrey, senior staff therapist and research scientist with The Family Institute, an affiliate of Northwestern University. Humphrey is an associate professor in the university's Department of Psychiatry.

The seminar will present a model of healthy family relations through early marriage, the birth and growth of children, and launching the children into independent adulthood. The workship will also examine marital relations beyond child-rearing and into older age.

All Argonne and DOE employees and their families are invited.

Scientific writing is topic of Jan. 10 seminar

Judith Swan, lecturer in biochemistry and science writing at Princeton University, will speak on "The Science of Scientific Writing" on Tuesday, Jan. 10.

Swan's talk will be held at 10:30 a.m. in the Building 205 Y-Wing auditorium.

For more information, call Joe Harmon (CMT) at ext. 2-7535.

Cafeteria to close early Jan. 12

The Building 213 cafeteria will close at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 12, for an all-DOE meeting. It will reopen for breakfast on Friday, Jan. 13.

    Pool league seeks players

The spring session of the Argonne Pool League will begin at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 10, at Le Cue Billiards and Sports Lounge, 8109 S. Cass Ave., Darien.

No experience is necessary. Previous team captains and anyone else interested in joining should call Debbie Mounce (IPD) at ext. 2-3372 or Tim Klosowski (EWM) at ext. 2-7497.

    Conflict of interest forms sought

A conflict of interest review is now under way, and any Argonne employee whose activities outside the laboratory might pose a conflict of interest must complete a conflict of interest disclosure certificate.

Disclosure certificates, and more information about the policy, can be obtained through division offices. Completed forms should be returned to division offices for final review.

Those who have already completed a form and whose status has not changed do not need to take further action.
