DOE budget would boost user facilities

A $100 million Science Facilities Initiative in the U.S. Department of Energy's budget proposal for fiscal year 1996 would improve access, availability and user support for industry and university researchers at four Argonne user facilities.

DOE's budget proposal is part of President Clinton's $1.61 trillion budget package, sent to Congress Feb. 6. The initiative represents a funding increase of about 10 percent, but will increase operations by about 30 percent at two dozen research machines, according to DOE.

If the initiative isn't changed as the federal budget wends its way through Congress, Argonne may receive as much as $12.4 million in additional funding. Currently, the Science Facilities Initiative calls for increases of $1.1 million for the Electron Microscopy Center, $1.1 million for the Argonne Tandem Linear Accelerator System (ATLAS), $5.2 million for the Intense Pulsed Neutron Source (IPNS) and $5 million in grants to Advanced Photon Source users for beamlines.

"In many research areas, such as materials science, U.S. industry relies heavily on the department's facilities to conduct experiments that would otherwise be too expensive or even impossible to carry out," according to DOE's proposal.

    DEP to expand internship program

After a successful start in 1994, the Division of Educational Programs is seeking to expand the Argonne/Industry Internship Program.

The program offers undergraduates majoring in science, engineering or mathematics an opportunity to serve a joint summer internship at Argonne and a local industry.

Six students did research at Argonne and local industrial firms during the summer of 1994. DEP hopes to accommodate 20 students during the summer of 1995.

The cost of each internship is shared by DEP and the participating company, so Argonne researchers can bring in students for the internship at no cost to their division. Last year, interns conducted research in the fields of ceramic science and engineering; environmental geology; chemistry; chemical engineering and mechanical engineering.

The 11-week internship period will begin May 30, 1995. Employees interested in taking advantage of this program should call Deon Ettinger (DEP) at ext. 2-4272.

    TIS libraries ask return
    of all materials for inventory

Argonne employees will receive notices asking them to return all library materials in their possession as IPD-TIS conducts an inventory of the Argonne libraries' collections during February and March.

This is the first time in Argonne's history that the library system has undertaken a complete inventory to identify materials that have been lost over the years. The inventory is also an essential step in completing the automation project begun with the introduction of the Argonne Information Management (AIM) System in 1991.

Those wishing to renew library materials can request that the item receive immediate processing. After the inventory is completed, the IPD-TIS libraries will impose a one-year limit on loans of all books and full-size technical reports.

Seminars to focus on `blended families'

The first of nine monthly seminars on family life, "Beyond the Brady Bunch & Cinderella: Living in a Remarried Family," will be held on Tuesday, February 14.

Presenter Amy Wagner is a senior staff therapist and supervisor with The Family Institute. Her presentation will focus on ways to strengthen remarried or blended families, common challenges faced by family members and ideas for developing healthy blended families.

Seminars will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on the second Tuesday of each month in the Building 203 Auditorium. All Argonne and DOE employees and family members are welcome. Topics include:

    * March 14: "Hot Monogamy" by William H. Hamilton and Terri A. Hamilton

    * April 11: "Couples Communication: Troubled Waters" by William H. Hamilton

    * May 9: "Communicating Effectively" by Elina Maghni

    * June 13: "Unhealthy Family Relations" by Catherine Weigel Foy

    * July 11: "When Violence Hits Home" by Elina Maghni

    * August 8: "Adolescence: Battleground or Sanctuary?" by Catherine Weigel Foy

Videotapes of the seminars will be available for loan from the Medical Department. Call ext. 2-2813 for information. Flyers with additional information will be distributed before each seminar.

"The Family Series" is presented by the faculty of the Family Institute, a Northwestern University affiliate, and is sponsored by Argonne's Employee Assistance Program.

    HR offers computer, English classes

Registration is being taken for on-site classes in the "Windows 3.1" operating system for IBM-compatible computers, "WordPerfect" word-processing software and English as a Second Language.

Cost for each class is $150, and participants must furnish an appropriate divisional overhead account. Call ext. 2-3410 to register.

    * Fundamental Windows 3.1 (Course HR112) teaches students how to manage and explore the Windows display, explore applications with the Program Manager, create directories and organize files. Class will be held Tuesday, Feb. 21, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Building 362, room E188. Class size is limited to 12.

    * Fundamental WordPerfect 6.0 For Windows (Course HR144), provides experience in the basic skills of the word-processing software for IBM-compatible PCs. Students will learn to create, save, print and retrieve documents, revise documents, set and change tabs, fonts and styles, and use a spell-checker and thesaurus. Class will be held Wednesday, Feb. 22, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m in Building 362, room E188. Class size is limited to 12.

    * English As A Second Language (Course 000534) helps non-native speakers improve their English language skills on the job through a culturally interactive approach. The first class will be held Tuesday, March 7, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Building 221, room A261. Testing for new students only will be held Thursday, March 2, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Class size is limited to 15.

Lead bricks sought for cleaning, on-site use

The Waste Management Office wants Argonne to "get the lead out" -- so it can be cleaned.

WMO will clean contaminated lead bricks, thanks to a $485,000 Pollution Prevention Return-on-Investment grant to the Special Projects Office. The grant requires that Argonne clean 10,000 lead bricks for on-site reuse in fiscal year 1995.

The materials will be cleaned with carbon dioxide ice-pellet blast-cleaner equipment, which removes surface contamination without damaging the object being cleaned. It can clean a wide variety of contaminated surfaces, like fume hoods and manipulator arms and fingers.

Because of the grant requirements, however, lead brick and lead sheet cleaning have priority. Following project completion, the portable blast-cleaner will be available through WMO.

Waste management is looking for activated and/or surface contaminated lead bricks or sheets. They will pick up the contaminated lead materials, clean them, apply a plastic coating and either return them or store them for future use. Activated bricks will be coated with a distinctive color.

For more information, contact Jennifer McHenry at ext. 2-3957.

Skin cancer, ozone topics of discussion

Skin cancer, sunlight and the ozone layer will be the topics of discussion on Wednesday, Feb. 15 at the Sigma Xi speaker series.

Meyrick J. Peak (CMB) will discuss types of human skin cancer, their treatment, and the role of sun exposure in causing the disease. He will also talk about the effects of ozone layer thinning on the development of skin cancer and on larger issues of global ecology. Peak will lecture at noon in the Building 203 Auditorium.

    Contact lens solutions now
    reimbursable under flex account

Employees participating in Argonne's Health Care Flexible Spending Account Plan (HCFSA) can be reimbursed for contact lens solutions due to a change in IRS regulations.

The term "solutions" refers to any solutions required for contact lens maintenance, such as saline solutions, cleaners, and rewetting drops.

CIGNA will accept HCFSA expenses for contact lens solutions for 1994 if they are submitted by the end of March 1995. A reimbursement claim form, along with a cash register receipt for the contact lens solution, should be submitted to CIGNA. Reimbursable items and their costs should be circled on the receipt. 1995 expenses for contact lens solutions can be submitted for reimbursement for this calendar year.

Contact lens solutions are not considered a covered expense under any of the Argonne medical plans.

For more information on reimbursement of these additional items under the HCFSA, call CIGNA at 1-800-242-2269.
