    Argonne, DOE named
    `Star Partners' for
    environmental leadership Argonne and the U.S. Department of Energy have been named "Star Partners" by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA).

    The IEPA grants the award for leadership in protecting the environment, in reaching out to inform the surrounding community about environmental issues and activities, and in carrying out new research that helps protect the environment.

    "This award recognizes the continuing cooperation among the IEPA, Argonne, and DOE's Chicago Operations Office and Argonne Group to protect the environment on and around the Argonne site," said Dean E. Eastman, Argonne director and chief executive officer. "It also recognizes our continuing efforts to develop new, environmentally friendly technologies and to convey them to industry and the public."

    The award recognizes numerous Argonne and DOE environmental outreach activities, including

    * Work with industry to develop new environmentally friendly technologies, such as recycling metal and non-metal parts of old cars and reducing the amount of copper in waste streams from circuit-board manufacturing;

    * Research to develop improved methods for studying the environment and remediating environmental problems;

    * Sponsorship of and participation in professional conferences that help spread new environmental science and technology to private industry and government agencies;

    * Educational contributions, such as workshops to help high school teachers improve their environmental science curricula;

    * Special Earth Day events for public schools and Argonne and DOE employees;

    * Sponsorship of and participation in public meetings; and

    * Periodic open houses and public tours.

    Blix to speak on nuclear power
    at final `Partners in Progress' talk

    Hans Blix, an internationally recognized champion of the peaceful uses of nuclear energy, will speak on "Nuclear Power: Prospects for Revival" at the final colloquium in the "Partners in Progress" series Nov. 5

    Blix, director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency, will speak at 3 p.m. in Argonne-East's Building 402 (Advanced Photon Source Conference Center).

    Blix was a member of the Swedish delegation to the Geneva Disarmament Conference from 1962 to 1978. He led the Liberal Campaign Committee in supporting the retention of the Swedish nuclear energy program in the national referendum of 1980.

    He previously served as Swedish minister for foreign affairs, undersecretary of state in charge of international development cooperation and legal advisor.

    He has written several books on international and constitutional law.

    Physical Review Letters Online
    Debuts on AIM System

    Physical Review Letters is now available online through the Argonne Information Management (AIM) System. Employees with desktop access to the Internet can now view and print pages from Physical Review Letters before they become available in the print journal.

    The Web address for the AIM System, which is administered by the Information and Publishing Division, is http://www.ipd. anl.gov/aim. At the AIM System web page, select "EJournals."

    Connecting to Physical Review Letters Online requires a web browser such as Netscape and a portable document format (PDF) file viewer like Acrobat Reader. A link to download the Acrobat PDF viewer is available from the Ejournals web page.

    Argonne's subscription to Physical Review Letters Online is limited to three concurrent users and is available only to Argonne employees. Physical Review Letters Online can be searched by author, title, or volume and issue. Journal issues beginning in 1995 are available through the online connection.

    This will be the first in a series of electronic journals that IPD will be making available through the AIM System. Contact the nearest IPD librarian for more information or to make suggestions.

    `Dumpster Dive'
    marks start of
    MOPP program

    Cherri Langenfeld, Manager of DOE's Chicago Operations Office, helped DOE and Argonne Environmental Management Operations (EMO) employees sort through a waste bin during a "Dumpster Dive" marking the start of the new Mixed Office Paper Pilot (MOPP) program.

    The dive aimed at separating a day's worth of waste into categories such as plastics, aluminum, paper, cardboard and other metals to gain a better understanding of what is thrown away and to provide a starting point for evaluating the effectiveness of the MOPP program.

    With MOPP, employees now separate all paper products into a special blue bin in each office that is picked up twice weekly. A decal on the bin lists all acceptable paper products. MOPP keeps about 12 tons of mixed paper out of landfills each week.

    University's area code
    to change to 773 Oct. 12

    The area code for the University of Chicago will change from 312 to 773 on Oct. 12.

    The city of Chicago will be divided into two area codes, 312 and 773. The Loop area will retain the 312 area code, and the "non-Loop" area, which includes Hyde Park, will change to the new 773 area code.

    Most wireless services, such as cellular phones and pagers, will not be required to change area codes. One exception to this will be the (312) 753-1880 telephone number used by faculty and staff members to access the university's paging system. The area code will change to 773 on Oct. 12.
