    R&D 100 entries sought

The Industrial Technology Development Center (ITD) is seeking entries for R&D magazine's 1997 R&D 100 awards.

R&D 100 winners are "the most significant technical products of the year" as selected by the magazine on the basis of importance, uniqueness, and usefulness. "Technical products" include materials, processes, software, programs, or systems of scientific or technical origin or use. To be eligible, the entry must have been marketed or available in 1996. Argonne won five awards this year.

Employees interested in entering should complete a technology summary form and send it to Cynthia Wesolowski (ITD) in Argonne-East's Building 900 by Wednesday, Dec. 11. Forms are available in division office and at the Technology Transfer exhibit in the Building 213 Cafeteria.

ITD will review completed forms. Recommendations for preparing a final entry along with an entry form will be sent back to employees in early January.

For more information, call Wesolowski at ext. 2-7694.

    Argonne-West hosts
    international visitors

About 30 representatives of Russia's Minatom, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the Energy Department visited Argonne-West to examine and discuss technologies for secure storage of fissile materials.

Visitors included James Larrimore, principal officer to the IAEA's deputy director general of safeguards, and Nikolai Khlebnikov, who heads Minatom's department of International Relations. IAEA's delegation included those responsible for inspecting safeguards on nuclear materials worldwide.

At Argonne-West, the visitors saw demonstrations of a system of sensors and computers that capture data and images at storage facilities and store them for later review. The system, developed by Sandia National Laboratories and being tested at Argonne-West, reduces the need for visits and lowers storage and monitoring costs.

    ACL award honors
    `the Michael Jordan
    of analytical chemistry'

Don Graczyk and Ben Tani (both CMT-AC) were the recipients of the first Kenneth J. Jensen Award for Excellence of the Chemical Technology Division's Analytical Chemistry Laboratory.

The award was established by the Analytical Chemistry Laboratory (ACL) to honor one of its charter members by recognizing the work of outstanding current ACL employees. Jensen led the laboratory's chemical analysis group from 1975 until his retirement, and continued to perform consulting work with the laboratory until his death in 1994 -- after 50 years of service. He was remembered at the award ceremony as a master chemist and troubleshooter and an excellent teacher.

"The award is a fitting tribute to someone who meant so much to us," said Analytical Chemistry Laboratory Manager Dave Green.

Graczyk and Tani received a personal plaque and an entry on a permanent plaque that will be prominently list their names and those of future recipients. The permanent plaque will be prominently displayed at the Analytical Chemistry Laboratory.

Graczyk is group leader of the chemical analysis group with 21 years of service at Argonne. He specializes in inorganic and nuclear analytical chemistry.

Tani is a chemist in the analytical service group, specializing in X-ray powder diffraction. Although he retired in 1995 with 39 years of service, he continues to serve as a special-term appointee. "Ken was the Michael Jordan of analytical chemistry," Tani said.

    Ferraro reflects on
    55 years in chemistry

Argonne chemist John Ferraro gave a lecture on his 55-year science career at the 35th annual Eastern Analytical Symposium and Exposition held on Nov. 18 in Somerset, New Jersey.

Titled "Summary of a 55-year Career in Science -- The Return of the 1970 Gold Metal Awardee in Spectroscopy," Ferraro's lecture outlined a career that has included research in molecular spectroscopy with an emphasis on far infrared spectroscopy; spectroscopy of solids at ultra-high pressure; the spectroscopy of conductive materials; and characterization of new immune-stimulator drugs.

Ferraro first came to the laboratory in 1948. He also has served as the Searle Professor of Chemistry at Loyola University and as an adjunct professor in the Lunar and Planetary Department of the University of Arizona.
