    Argonne wins two FLC awards

The Federal Laboratory Consortium for Technology Transfer (FLC) has honored Argonne with two Awards for Excellence in Technology Transfer.

Recognized were "Empore Rad Disks," a new technology that separates radioactive isotopes from water and other solutions, and the "Magnetic Flux Imaging System," which allows scientists to make images of magnetic fields in superconductors, materials that carry electricity with no energy loss when cooled to near absolute zero.

Empore Rad Disks were developed by Mitchell Erickson (ER), Kent Orlandini (ER) and Lesa Smith (CMT-AC), Gary Goken and Keith Hoffman of 3M Corp. and Ron Breuning of IBC Technologies, Inc. They greatly reduce the time and cost of measuring radioisotope concentrations and reduce the amount of waste generated by the laboratory.

The Magnetic Flux Imaging System was developed by Ulrich Welp (MSD), George W. Crabtree (MSD), V. K. Vlasko-Vlasov (MSD), V. I. Nikitienko of the Institute for Solid State Physics, and Carlos Duran of Phase Metrics. The instrument is being used to pinpoint the location of flaws in superconducting wire and to improve its performance.

These technologies were also winners of "R&D 100" awards, given annually by R&D magazine to the "100 most significant technical products of the year." Argonne received five R&D 100 awards in 1996.

The FLC Awards recognize federal laboratory employees who have done an outstanding job transferring technology developed in a laboratory to outside partners, primarily in the private sector.

    Argonne offers Internet training
    for Chicago-area teachers

Argonne's Divison of Educational Programs is again offering Chicago-area teachers classes in how to use the Internet as a classroom resource.

The classes are part of the Educational Networking Consortium (ENC), a collaboration of school districts and other organizations providing kindergarten through 12th grade educators in the Chicago area dial-up Internet access for school and home use for the price of a local phone call.

"Cyber Launch Pad" is the introductory class that will connect users to the Internet using official ENC access. Each session consists of four classes that meet once a week from 4:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Other training courses offered at the laboratory will include an introduction to multimedia presentations, a review to help educators locate and adapt Internet resources to their curricula; and the use of hyper text markup language -- the language used to develop World Wide Web home pages.

For more information, contact Carol Przyzycki by fax at (630) 252-3193 or by e-mail at cprzyzy@dep.anl.gov.

    Moncton named
    `scientist of year'
    by college foundation

David Moncton, associate laboratory director for the Advanced Photon Source, recently was named "Scientist of the Year" by the Chicago chapter of ARCS -- the Achievement Rewards for College Scientists Foundation.

Moncton was honored for his role in the design, construction and operation of the Advanced Photon Source (APS) and for heading an APS technical team experienced in managing construction projects and developing accelerator and beamline systems.

ARCS also honored Chicago newsman Bill Kurtis, naming him "Man of the Year." Kurtis was recognized for innovative news reporting and for his work on the award-winning science documentary series "The New Explorers."

"The New Explorers" is an integral part of the Chicago Science Explorers Program, classroom activies developed at Argonne and used in Chicago-area science classes and offered nationwide. The program, aimed mainly at minority students, encourages young people to consider science careers. The one-hour shows focus on an individual scientists and their work to portray science as an exciting and useful endeavor.

The ARCS Foundation's mission is to help meet the need for scientists and engineers in the United States by providing scholarships to academically outstanding U.S. students.

At the recent ARCS luncheon, $60,000 in scholarships was presented to 11 students attending the University of Chicago, Northwestern University , Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine and the Illinois Institute of Technology.
