    ANL-W scientists receive top honors

Argonne-West scientists Douglas Crawford, H. Peter Planchon, John Sackett and Bobby Seidel have received top awards from the American Nuclear Society.

    * Planchon received the Seaborg Medal, awarded for outstanding long-term individual excellence in nuclear research. He developed reactor modeling and experiments which led to the use of passive response to accidents in sodium-cooled reactors. His work was demonstrated in a 1986 experiment in which Experimental Breeder Reactor-II (EBR-II), operating at full power, was subjected to accident conditions and safely shut itself down without operator intervention. Other tests demonstrated that simpler and safer nuclear plants could be designed for the future. Planchon serves as an associate director of the Engineering Division.

    * Sackett received the Walker Cisler Medal, a special award that recognizes outstanding scientific or engineering research achievements in the design and development of the fast breeder reactor as applied to electric power generation. Sackett's contributions to fast reactor technology resulted in new and better approaches to plant protection and safety. The improvement in protection also resulted in better plant operation, as demonstrated by EBR-II. Sackett is deputy associate laboratory director for Argonne-West.

    * Seidel received the American Nuclear Society's Public Communications Award for his outstanding service in communicating the nuclear message to the public. Seidel directs student and faculty programs at Argonne-West, and was the driving force behind the planning and construction of the nuclear energy display for the Idaho Falls-Bonneville County Museum.

    * Crawford received the Young Member Engineering Achievement Award. The award recognizes a series of experiments on reactor fuels. Crawford has become a recognized expert in dealing with plutonium. He is manager of the Engineering Division's materials technology section.

The American Nuclear Society is an international, non-profit organization of more than 17,000 engineers, scientists, educators, students and others with nuclear related interests. These individuals represent more than 1,600 corporations, educational institutions, and government agencies.

The society's main objectives are the advancement of engineering and science relating to the atomic nucleus, particularly operating nuclear power plants and other nuclear activities.
