    Argonne's very own
TV network is on the air

Don't touch that dial. The Argonne TV Network is on the air.

A network of 24 channels is now carrying educational programming, national news and entertainment shows to resident rooms at the Argonne Guest House and several public conference rooms on the Argonne-East site.

The creation of the network was a collaboration between the Information and Publishing Division's Video Group and the Electronics and Computing Technologies Division.

Satellite downlinks and a fiber optic distribution network allow the rooms linked to the network to tune in to any of the channels. "We're better equipped than some cable companies," said Jim Cullen, video group manager.

The new network also will allow Argonne programs and presentations to be routed throughout the site on the Argonne Info Channel (Channel 6), making them more accessible to employees at both Argonne sites.

For example, a special address like the State of the Lab or director's colloquia could be broadcast from the Building 402 Conference Center to conference rooms across the Argonne-East site.

Public conference rooms already hooked up to the network at Argonne-East include the Building 203 Auditorium; the Building 402 Conference Center; the 3A conference room in DOE's Building 201 office and the DOE training area in Building 212.

There are still many possibilities for expanding the services and information on the Argonne channel. "This eventually could reside in every conference room in every building," Cullen said.

For more information on the Argonne TV Network, contact Cullen at ext. 2-5600.

    Optics Shop moves
    to APS main floor

The Central Shops Optics Group recently completed its move from Argonne-East's Building 212 to new quarters in Building 400 -- the Advanced Photon Source (APS) Experiment Hall.

The new workspace is right in the heart of a major source of work. The group is preparing silicon and germanium crystals for X-ray optics used by APS researchers and collaborative access teams.

The Optics Group's services are available to all Argonne divisions. They specialize in machining ceramics, crystals, metals, optical glass, plastics, semiconductors and other materials for use as optical elements or precision instrument components. Its employees also provide consultation on optics manufacturing. The shop is part of the Electronics and Computing Technologies Division's Central Shops.

A satellite machine shop and "hot shop" will remain in Building 212, Room H121.

More information is available on the group's World Wide Web page at http://www.anl.gov/CS.

    HR offers Russian,
    finance classes

Human Resources is offering Russian language classes and financial training for non-financial managers.

The Russian Language course (HR164), taught by Lily Huberman, starts Tuesday, April 8. Beginning and intermediate sessions will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays through May in Building 207, Room FB119. Participants practice listening to, speaking and writing the Russian language.

Fundamentals of Finance and Accounting for Non-Financial Managers (HR101) will provide a clear understanding of financial and accounting terms and an ability to interpret and prepare financial statements. This course meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11:30 a.m. - 1 p.m. in Argonne-East's Building 201, Room 238, beginning April 22 and ending May 22. This is one of many Certified Professional Secretaries (CPS) courses designed to help secretaries attain CPS certification or recertification. It is open to anyone who needs to develop a solid grounding in the fundamentals of finance and accounting.

Call Betty Iwan (HR) at ext. 2-3410 for more information.

    Now playing: Rube Goldberg contest

The video kiosks are now playing a ChicagoLand TV news report on Argonne's Rube Goldberg Machine Contest for High Schools, held Feb. 28 at Navy Pier in Chicago.

The segment shows the workings of some of the machines entered in the contest, which was sponsored by Argonne.

Chicago's Marist High School won the contest, which challenged students to build a complex machine that performed a simple task -- playing a compact disk.

    -- Pacesetter Awards --

William Smith (PFS) won a Pacesetter Award for resolving pump problems. He used recent training to investigate problems in a pumping system and determine that eight small pumps were not needed, and a second pump could be replaced with a smaller version. Maintenance and energy savings were estimated at $5,400 per year.

Steve Bengston (PFS) received a Pacesetter Award for making several energy-saving suggestions to an engineering team working in Argonne-East's Building 202. His recommendations will save $8,200 per year in energy costs.

Earl Powell (PFS), Patty Gajewski (PFS) and Yvette Woell (IPD-TIS) received a Pacesetter Award for working out a more efficient and cost-effective method for delivering library materials. Their changes will save $20,000 per year in driving and rigging service charges.

Kelly Jaje (ASD) received a Pacesetter Award for preparing the proceedings of the 7th Beam Instrumentation Workshop. The 550-page document, comprising 56 papers, required extensive editing on a variety of computer and software types. Jaje accomplished the work in addition to her regular duties.

Anita Bakke (CHM) was presented with a Pacesetter Award for organizing the Chemistry Division's participation in Argonne's 50th Anniversary Open House. She coordinated tours; directed more than 100 Chemistry Division employees who acted as tour guides; organized activities such as the "Magic of Chemistry" show and made sure safety procedures were in place to protect visitors.

Deanna Hollo (CHM) was presented with a Pacesetter Award for her extraordinary efforts in organizing two consecutive DOE Chemical Sciences Program Reviews in 10 days. Hollo took over these duties just a week and a half before the first review. Her attention to detail ensured that both reviews ran smoothly.
