The laboratory must reduce radioactive, mixed, and hazardous waste generation, and the release of toxic emissions, by Dec. 31, 1999. Argonne will make periodic progress reports to DOE.
The DOE goals use the calendar year 1993 as a baseline. By the year 2000, Argonne must:
* Reduce the generation of radioactive, hazardous and low-level mixed waste by 50 percent. ("Mixed waste" contains both hazardous chemical wastes and radioactive wastes.)
* Reduce the generation of sanitary waste by 33 percent, and recycle 33 percent of sanitary waste.
* Reduce total releases and off-site transfers for treatment and disposal of toxic chemicals by 50 percent.
* Increase the procurement of recycled products by 100 percent, except where they are not commercially available competitively at a reasonable price or do not meet performance standards.
Argonne's Environmental Management Operations plans to reduce research and development wastes by increasing awareness, training, and involvement within the research community.
"To reduce the generation of low-level mixed waste by 50 percent will be a challenge," said Chris Grandy (EMO).
Argonne plans to meet this goal by increasing general employee awareness, improving housekeeping practices, expanding recycling programs, and disposing of stored waste to help reduce the amount of contaminated space on site. Waste Management will reduce disposal volumes by using better methods and equipment to sort, shred and compact waste.
"Reducing the generation of mixed waste by 50 percent will be possible by a combination of new waste treatment processes already being used by Waste Management, source substitution, and waste stream reduction," said Grandy.
"Argonne is already reducing hazardous waste and the release of toxic chemicals off site by eliminating the use of high-sulfur coal and replacing chlorofluorocarbons to reduce air emissions," he said
Many chemicals are now being recycled rather than being treated for disposal. Also, the levels of chemicals in water discharged off site will decrease with upgrades to the Canal Wastewater Treatment Plant and the completion of the new Sanitary and Laboratory Wastewater Treatment Plants that use up-to-date technologies.
Sanitary waste has already been reduced by the mixed office paper program (MOPP), which began in 1996. Argonne is also recycling metal, fiber, and plastic, which will help meet the 33 percent reduction for this goal.
"The goal to purchase recycled products will be the most difficult to meet because there are rigorous requirements for documenting a product that does not meet specifications or is not cost-effective," said Grandy. "This goal requires 100 percent participation by everyone at Argonne and must be met by awareness and procurement controls."

It was the third time in the last four years and the sixth time in the last 12 that an Argonne team has won the championship.
The Knights won by beating Motorola in the final round of the CICL playoffs Saturday, May 17.
Knights team members are Roy Benedek (CMT), Matt Elliott (TD) Brian Golchert (ES), Bob Hill ((RA), Jeff Keisler (DIS), George Kinsella (ESH-Ret.), Mike Makai (RA), Joe Morrison (XFD), Ed Semones (ESH-HP), Edward Suarez and Abdellatif Yacout (RA).
The CICL consists of 24 teams from Chicago-area companies, educational institutions, research organizations and government organizations.
Other teams in this year's playoffs were the Argonne Rooks, a CICL alumni team, and teams from Case, Lucent Technologies, Nation's Bank-CRT and UOP.

Timecards for employees who work the weekend should be delivered to the Payroll Department by noon on Tuesday, May 27. Timecards received after these deadline dates are not guaranteed payment on June 6.

In addition to being sent to about 2,000 readers in industry and government, the materials issue will be distributed at Materials Week '97, a convention sponsored by the American Materials Society and held at Indianapolis in mid-September.
Interested employees should request an author's kit, which includes guidelines and examples, from Mary Kmak (ITD), ext. 2-9124, or send a fax to ext. 2-5230. Her e-mail address is kmakm@smtplink.itd.anl.gov.
Deadline for the materials issue is Monday, June 16.

Agencies sponsoring information booths at lunchtime during the week of June 2-6 include:
* Illinois Network for Employers of Traffic Safety,
* Illinois Secretary of State,
* Operation Lifesaver (railroad crossing safety).

The seminar was the second in a series of communication seminars sponsored by Human Resources and Women in Science and Technology at Argonne-West.
The Conflict Resolution Seminar included two two-hour sessions conducted by Jan Northup Kratochwill of Management Training Systems, Inc. Kratochwill presented information on behavior types, causes of conflict and developing strategies for resolving conflict.

Sponsored by Argonne, the Chicago Section of the Society of Automotive Engineers and Case Corp., the sprint was held at Case's Hinsdale plant under near-perfect conditions: bright sunshine.
Students purchased $21 kits containing a solar cell, motor and various gears in January. There was no weight limit on the cars, but the dimensions were restricted to approximately shoebox size. The solar panels can provide between two and 2.5 volts.
This year's winner of the racing competition was St. John's Lutheran School, LaGrange. Design winners were Charles J. Sahs School, Chicago.

For example, the 301 prefix is used for Lockport (area code 708) and Roselle (847). Adding to the confusion was the assignment of multiple area codes to a single community -- Lockport has to endure three: 630, 708 and 815.
Directory errors
A few errors have been noticed in the 1997 Argonne Directory. Employees whose home phone number is listed should check the area code. If changes are needed, contact a division Human Resources coordinator.

The meeting will feature a technical discussion of modem operation and other remote access technologies by Paul T. Phillips (ECT), manager of telecommunications engineering.
The talk will focus on the home office, the Argonne network environment necessary to support their growth and Electronics and Computing Technologies Division services. Discussion will include high-speed modems, integrated services digital network (ISDN) and asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL) technologies. Recommended vendor products will be discussed for each technology.
