Associate Director Charles Till to retire

Charles Till, Argonne's longest-serving associate laboratory director, has announced he will retire at the end of the year.

"As dean of the associate laboratory directors," said Argonne Director Dean Eastman, "he played a unique and central role in maintaining highest standards in science and technology programs and in management and operational matters throughout the laboratory."

Till will continue to serve the laboratory in a newly created position of Senior Counselor to the Laboratory Director. Deputy Associate Laboratory Director Yoon Chang has accepted the post of Associate Laboratory Director for Engineering Research. John Sackett continues as Deputy Associate Laboratory Director for Argonne-West.

Till has led reactor development research at Argonne since 1980. Under his direction, an inherently safe reactor design -- the Integral Fast Reactor -- was proven and demonstrated. He led Argonne in major advances in nuclear reactor efficiency and in developing new technologies to reduce nuclear reactor waste and lessen problems of nuclear material proliferation.

Till was director and associate director of the former Applied Physics Division. He also managed the Zero Power Reactor Program and headed development of reactor critical experiments. Till came to Argonne in 1963 from the CANDU reactor program in Canada.

Under President Jimmy Carter, Till served as Technical Director for the U.S. delegation on fast reactors with the International Nuclear Fuel-Cycle Evaluation -- the U.S.-led international effort to reinforce nuclear non-proliferation.

Till also did extensive work on disarmament and non-proliferation with the Arms Control and Disarmament Agency of the Department of State, and DOE's Office of International Affairs.

Engineering Research is about 40 percent of Argonne's research effort and includes fission reactor research, fusion and all of Argonne-West.

    ANL-West's Hansen
    wins diversity award

Argonne-West Computer Scientist Linda H. Hansen (ED), has received the first annual President's Diversity Award from Lockheed Martin Idaho Technologies Co. (LMITCO).

The award recognizes Hansen's efforts and contributions towards furthering the professional and technical development of women.

Hansen has taken the lead in redirecting the Women In Science and Technology (WIST) group toward career development and represents the Idaho site on the Argonne WIST Steering Committee. She is actively involved in promoting nontraditional careers for young women and speaks with students about careers in the computer and scientific field.

In cooperation with the Diversity Program Office at Argonne-East, Hansen and the members of WIST initiated the first all-employee communication seminars. To date, three seminars have been organized to bridge communication differences. In keeping with her commitment to encourage career growth, Hansen initiated a pilot mentoring program for Argonne-West.

LMITCO President W. John Denson established the award to recognize individuals critical to the success of the company's diversity initiative. LMITCO manages and operates the Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory, where Argonne-West is located.

    Argonne-West marks
    10th 'Chemistry Week'

Argonne-West employees are invited to join National Chemistry Week activities Nov. 2 - 8.

An outreach program of the American Chemical Society (ACS), the 10th annual National Chemistry Week is aimed at enhancing the public's awareness of the contributions of chemistry to everyday life and the nation's economy. It is celebrated nationwide by approximately 200 ACS local sections, industrialists, educators and promoters of chemistry awareness.

During National Chemistry Week, promotional items and handouts will be available at a display in the lobby of the Laboratory and Office Building. Argonne-West's American Chemical Society members will be available during lunch to answer questions about chemistry week and to hand out materials.

Chemist Mary Adamic (ED) Argonne-West's National Chemistry Week coordinator, said the display at the Idaho site is only one of the many activities planned for southeastern Idaho. Additional activities include:

    * Participation in a nationwide experiment to determine the water hardness across the US,

    * Performing more than 20 hands-on experiments both at an Idaho Falls mall and the public library,

    * Six "Chemical Magic" shows,

    * Displays at the Idaho Falls Public Library,

    * An elementary poster contest, and

    * Public displays at local universities and colleges.

In addition, Adamic and Argonne-West chemists Kevin Carney and Marsha Lambregts (both ED) will be leading hands-on activities with local elementary, junior and middle school students.

Local chemistry week activities are sponsored by the Idaho sections of the ACS, the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and the American Nuclear Society.

For more information about Idaho section activities, contact Adamic at ext. 3-7858.
