‘Seed Grant’ recipients to discuss research

Scientists who received 1998 Argonne-University of Chicago Collaborative Seed Grants will present short talks on their research at a symposium at Argonne-East Monday, May 18.

Employees whose schedules permit are invited to attend any of the talks at the all-day symposium, to be held in the Advanced Photon Source Conference Center (Building 401), starting at 9 a.m.

Eleven projects have been awarded funding under the program this year. Most of the projects will receive a total of $80,000 over two years, subject to available funding.

The symposium will begin at 8:50 a.m. with remarks by Argonne Director Dean Eastman and University of Chicago Associate Provost Bob Zimmer. Talks will be given by the principal investigators from each institution and will include:

bullet 9 a.m. -- "A Novel Process for Extracting Hydrogen Gas From Water."

9:40 a.m. -- "Time Resolved Mapping: Implications for Earth History."

10:50 a.m. -- "Function Follows Form: How Biological Molecules Adopt Their Shapes."

11:30 a.m. -- "Can Archaeological Data Be Used to Generate the Next Step in Social Modeling?"

2 p.m. -- "Synthetic Quantum Confined Materials."

2:40 p.m. -- "Computational Science: What? Why? Two Examples."

3:50 p.m. -- "Using the APS for Precision Microfabrication: Improving Medical Imaging."

The grant program was created in 1995 under the terms of the University-DOE contract to operate Argonne. The grants are designed to encourage joint initiatives by Argonne and University of Chicago researchers and to increase interactions between the university and Argonne. The program "seeds" funding for imaginative proposals that can lead to long-term enhancement of the university-laboratory intellectual relationship.

The competitive grants are open to all areas of mutual interest between the university and Argonne, and require a principal investigator from each institution.

Paul Fields, former CHM director, dies

Former Chemistry Division Director Paul Fields, whose career included work at the University of Chicago's Metallurgical Laboratory and co-discovery of several transuranic elements, died May 4 at the age of 79.

Services were held May 6 in Wilmette.

Fields joined the Metallurgical Laboratory, the secret project to build the first nuclear reactor, in 1943. He became group leader in 1946 and held that position until named Argonne Chemistry Division director in 1971.

Under his direction, the small division rapidly grew, helping establish Argonne as a leader in chemical and nuclear research with heavy elements.

Fields was an outstanding authority on the nuclear properties and chemistry of heavy elements. Many of the known transuranic isotopes (forms of elements heavier than uranium) were discovered by him and his co-workers. His group also furnished much of the data required by early designers of nuclear reactors. In 1970 he received the American Chemical Society Award for Nuclear Applications in Chemistry.

He held the post of Chemistry Division director until his retirement in 1981.

Young women learn about
scientific, technical careers

More than 400 young women from 70 Chicago_area high schools visited Argonne May 1 to learn about technical careers.

The annual "Science Careers In Search of Women" conference encourages young women to pursue careers in scientific and technical fields. The program included speakers, panel discussions, lab tours and information booths. At lunchtime, more than 80 women scientists and technical professionals discussed their careers and personal experiences with the students.

Info booths to focus on travel safety

Argonne's Traffic Safety Committee will sponsor a series of information booths in Argonne-East's Building 213 Cafeteria during "National Buckle Up America Week," May 18-22.

Organizations to be represented include:

Tuesday, May 19 -- Operation Lifesaver, the Illinois Commerce Commission's effort to prevent rail-crossing accidents.

Wednesday, May 20 -- American Automobile Association.

Thursday, May 21 -- Illinois Department of Transportation.

Friday, May 22 -- Illinois Secretary of State.

New features added to ITD Web pages

The Industrial Technology Development Center (ITD) has added three new features to its "internal information" World Wide Web site.

The new features include:

A work-for-others solicitation review log, which lists solicitations and a determination of whether Argonne may respond to them.

A bulletin board with news and other tech transfer information.

A link to the work-for-others proposal tracking database. The database is searchable by proposal number or principal investigator name. Additional search capabilities are planned.

Employees are encouraged to send comments and suggestions on the new features to Shari Zussman (ITD) at ext. 2-5936, or send e-mail to zussman@anl.gov.

Argonne Pioneers ready for annual reunion dinner

The dinner is open to all current and former Argonne, Met Lab, Atomic Energy Commission and Credit Union employees who worked in these organizations between 1942 and 1968, and all current employees with 30 or more years of service. Spouses and guests are welcome.

Registration and friendship time will be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., followed by dinner, music and dancing. A cash bar will be available. Cost is $20 per person, including tax and tip.

Reservations must be made by Monday, Oct. 12. Checks should be made payable to "Argonne Pioneers Reunion" and sent to P.O. Box 8326, Argonne, IL 60439. Tickets will not be issued; canceled checks will serve as receipts. Refunds will not be made after Oct. 1.

Addresses sought

The Pioneers are seeking current addresses of all present and former employees who worked at Argonne, Met Lab, Atomic Energy Commission and the Argonne Credit Union between 1942 and 1968.

Send information to the Pioneers post office box or to committee members: Evie Fagan (OPA), Ken Okolowitz (PFS), Howard Kittel, Mary Ann Tomkins, Dave Walker, Harry Youngquist, John Chonko, Evelyn Rutkowski and Richard Horton.

Books will be sold at discount

Marriott will hold a book fair at Argonne-East's Building 213 Cafeteria May 26-27.
