David Hill to lead Reactor Engineering Division

David J. Hill has been promoted to director of Argonne's Reactor Engineering Division.

The technically diverse division has significant programs in six areas, including nuclear technology, nuclear reactor safety, international nuclear programs, advanced computing and simulation, engineering mechanics, and materials behavior in engineered systems. The division also supports industrial outreach efforts.

Reactor Engineering employees lend their expertise to programs in other fields of nuclear and non-nuclear technology. The division employs 70 staff scientists and engineers, plus technicians, management and support personnel.

Hill will maintain his position as director of Argonne's International Nuclear Safety Center. With its counterpart at the Research and Development Institute of Power Engineering (RDIPE) in Moscow, the center maintains the basic knowledge needed to design and improve nuclear reactors and their safety technologies.

Previously, Hill was associate director of Argonne's Reactor Analysis Division. He won the University of Chicago's Distinguished Performance Award in 1993 for his innovative approach to developing a probabilistic risk assessment for Argonne's Integral Fast Reactor (IFR) prototype, an advanced nuclear reactor.

Voice mail system to be upgraded at ANL-East

Argonne's voice mail system will be upgraded between 6 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 18, and 6 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 19.

Voice mail service will not be available during this period. Employees attempting to access the voice mail system will hear a maintenance announcement.

The upgrade will make the system fully Year 2000 compliant, improve maintenance support efforts and make the latest digital technology available for future applications.

According to Mike Vonder Heide, section head of telecommunications services at ECT, employees should write down any critical information and delete all new and saved messages in their mailboxes before the upgrade begins. There is a slight chance that messages may be lost during the upgrade.

After the upgrade:

Recorded name and greetings may sound slightly different due to a higher "sampling rate." Vonder Heide recommends re-recording the greeting at any convenient time after the upgrade.

Employees may also notice a short, low-volume tone or click when accessing the voice mail system. This "convergence tone" is used to adjust the quality of connections.

New quick reference guides will be issued, but mailbox control commands will remain the same.

Employees should test the message waiting indication (the fluttering red light) by sending a message to their own voice-mailboxes.

Perhaps the most noticeable change will be the recorded voice telling employees they have voice mail waiting. It's been recorded by a different artist, "Marsha." Vonder Heide said Marsha's voice has been reported to be "softer, calmer and more mellow."

'Patches' recommended for e-mail security flaw

So far, no attempts have been made at Argonne to exploit a recently revealed security flaw in two popular electronic mail programs, according to Computer Protection Manager Paul Krystosek.

The security "hole" involves e-mail attachments — files such as text documents transmitted along with messages — sent to users of Microsoft Outlook Express and the e-mail component of Netscape's current Web browser.

According to computer security experts, it is possible to embed "malicious" code in the name of the attachment and cause the e-mail program to unexpectedly quit, the computer to crash, or worse.

Microsoft has posted a patch to its web site at http://www.microsoft.com/ie/security. Look for a link to "Outlook Express File Attachment security issue." Netscape's patch is expected soon at http://www.netscape.com.

Krystosek advised employees who use Outlook Express and Netscape Communicator to take the security flaw seriously and download the patches.

"We know of no instances of anyone exploiting it to attack computers at Argonne," he said. But when previous security flaws were made public, malicious hackers went to work and "within days they tried to use it."

WIST panel needs four members

Argonne's Women in Science and Technology (WIST) steering committee has openings for four representatives from the laboratory's staff of women technical employees.
