Deitrich is named senior technical advisor
L. Walter Deitrich has been appointed senior technical advisor in the laboratory's Engineering Research Administration office.
As senior technical advisor, Deitrich will provide counsel and assistance to Yoon Chang in technical administration of the Engineering Research programs. He will also lead and participate in special projects in which technical leadership from the associate laboratory director's office is required.
Previously, Deitrich served as director of the Reactor Engineering Division for five years, following 13 years as associate division director.
Concurrently, he served as director of Argonne's International Nuclear Safety Center from 1994-96, director of Engineering Research for the New Production Reactors Program from 1990-92, and director of the EBR-II probabilistic risk assessment project from 1988-89.
Friday, Aug. 21, will be Argonne-West Family Night at McDermott Field in Idaho Falls.
Idaho site employees are invited to a baseball game pitting the Idaho Falls Braves against the Billings Mustangs. The gate opens at 6 p.m., and the game begins at 7:15 p.m. The cost is $3 per person, which includes admission, a hot dog and 16 oz. drink.
Tickets are available from secretaries in each area.
An old Argonne-West tradition was revived July 30 as a show of restored, classic, sport and street-rod cars was set up for display in the parking lot at the Idaho site.
Doug Schwartzenberger (OD) was responsible for organizing the event, held in conjunction with Argonne-West barbecue.
Sixteen cars were shown, and the owners of the cars were on hand to answer questions. Vehicles included a restored 1939 Chevrolet Street Rod, late '60s "muscle cars" and quarter-mile drag racers. One unusual entry was a Corvette Barbie Doll Car.
Rigby High School's shop class displayed a model A Roadster that they built. They have built a roadster each year for the past four years and sold chances to win the car to fund future school projects.
"Argonnet," the laboratory's one-stop World Wide Web page for employee information, has a new look.
The page has been reorganized to make it easier to find information on employee benefits, procurement, travel, computer repair and services, publications, and much more.
Argonnet is at http://inside.anl.gov/.
Collection boxes for the Argonne Combined Appeal (ACA) used book sale await employees' donations in the lobbies of Argonne-East's Buildings 201, 203, 205, 362, 401, 900 and the Building 213 Cafeteria.
Books will be collected until Sept. 1. Textbooks, magazines, encyclopedias or Reader's Digest condensed books cannot be accepted.
The Combined Appeal's second annual used book sale will be held Sept. 10-11.
For more information on the Combined Appeal see the ACA home page at http://www.anl.gov/ACA/aca-home.html.
Last week's revelations about security "flaws" in widely used e-mail programs point out the need for Argonne employees to be careful about using electronic mail to transmit sensitive or classified information.
The U.S. Department of Energy is urging all employees and contractors to follow these guidelines on Internet e-mail security:
Remember that e-mail sent over the Internet can be
intercepted or monitored. Information sent through the
network is as vulnerable to "eavesdropping" as the
common telephone call.
Sensitive or proprietary data should not be sent by e-mail
without proper precautions. To determine proper procedures
for network transfer, contact the assistant computer
protection program manager designated for the system on
which the data resides. The Computer Protection Program
Office at ext. 2-7153 can provide additional assistance with
sensitive or proprietary data.
All employees should be familiar with Argonne's computer
protection policy. To review the policy see
http://www.anl.gov/CPP.
For assistance with classified data, contact Kevin Milligan
(SEC) at ext. 2-8676.
The Argonne Chess Club will hold lunchtime speed-chess tournaments open to all employees Monday, Aug. 24 and 31, and Sept. 14 and 21 in Argonne-East's Building 362, Room E188.
Entry fee is $1. All fees will be returned as prizes. All needed equipment will be provided.
Games will be timed at 5 minutes. Swiss system pairings will be used if more than six players enter; otherwise pairings will be round robin.
Registration ends at noon. Games will start at 12:05 p.m.
For information, call Dave Baurac (OPA) at ext. 2-5584 or Bob Hill (RA) at ext. 2-4865.
