Researchers find better way to make vitamin C

Argonne's involvement in a five-year, joint venture research program has led to advances that will enable scientists to produce ascorbic acid, commonly known as vitamin C, less expensively and with less effect on the environment than the current process.

The technology, based on a fermentation system, is a major milestone in the development of new methods to manufacture chemicals from renewable raw materials like corn.

The long-term goal of the ongoing project is to reduce the size of factories by substituting enzymatic processes for chemical processing. Scientists believe this will lead to a reduction in manufacturing costs by lowering equipment costs.

Argonne, as a joint venture partner with Genencor International Inc., Eastman Chemical Company, Electrosynthesis Inc. and Microgenomics Inc., combined its technical expertise in several areas to develop the new system.

TheEnergy Systems, Environmental Research and Mathematics and Computer Science divisions, along with the Center for Mechanistic Biology and Biotechnology, have taken part in the project at Argonne.

"This is a good example of Argonne's ability to develop multidisciplinary collaboration across the laboratory," said Jim Frank, (ES) project manager for Argonne.

The endeavor was the first effort of the biotechnology working group initiated by Andrzej Joachimiak, director of the Structural Biology Center, and Frank.

Over the course of the project, the U.S. Department of Commerce's Advanced Technology Program and the industrial partners will have invested $31.3 million, with more than half the funding coming from industry.

According to Frank, by allowing the formation of industrial partnerships, the government enabled the development of higher risk technology than would normally be possible by individual companies.

In the remaining two years of the project, the group hopes to develop second- and third-generation processes and extend the technology to other commercially valuable chemicals.

Used books go on sale Sept. 10-11

TheArgonne Combined Appeal (ACA) will host its second annual used book sale fundraiser Thursday and Friday, Sept. 10-11, in Argonne-East's Building 213 Cafeteria.

The sale will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and will feature an assortment of used books donated by Argonne employees. Hardcover books will sell for $1 or buy three and get one free. Softcover books will be 50 cents and paperbacks will be three for $1. Children's books will be 25 cents each. Unsold items from the book fair will be donated to local charities either for use in their own libraries or for resale. Last year's sale raised nearly $2,500.

The Combined Appeal provides employees with a way to contribute to the Metropolitan Chicago United Way/Crusade of Mercy, United Way Will County and 18 other charities. This year's campaign will kick off in October with a clothing drive. For more information, see the Argonne Combined Appeal Web page.

Bridge to close

The Eastwood Extension bridge over Sawmill Creek at Argonne-East will be closed for about a month beginning 7 a.m., Wednesday, Sept. 9. The project is aimed at replacing the old bridge deck and installing a new guardrail.

DOE, University agree to
renegotiate prime contract

TheU.S. Department of Energy has announced its intention to negotiate with the University of Chicago to extend the current multi-year, performance-based contract for Argonne's management and operation.

The current contract ends Sept. 30. The new contract extension to be negotiated would extend the agreement for another five years.

A key incentive under the current contract was an option permitting DOE to extend the agreement based on superior performance. DOE recently rated Argonne's science and technology as "outstanding" -- its highest mark -- and operational performance as "excellent."

The full text of DOE's press release announcing the decision to begin negotiations is availableonline.

Security tightened in wake of terrorist activities

The U.S. Department of Energy has advised Argonne to change its security gate procedures due to recent terrorist activities targeting U.S. facilities.

Random inspections have begun on vehicles, especially commercial vehicles.

Anyone wishing to enter the site without an employee badge or vehicle sticker must report to the Argonne Information Center (Building 224) for a gate pass.

Contractors, vendors or any visitors will need to be cleared before their arrival. Employees expecting visitors should call the Argonne Information Center at ext. 2-5755.

ECT offers 800-number remote access service

Argonne employees can access the Internet and Argonne network services, such as e-mail accounts, from anywhere in the continental United States with a new remote access service being offered by the Electronics and Computing Technologies Division (ECT).

This nationwide system can provide service at up to 53,200 bits per second (Kbps) if the user has an analog 56 K-Flex modem, and at lower speeds with other modems. It can be accessed from anywhere in the continental United States with a 1-800 phone number.

This new service supports general terminal sessions, Macintosh and Microsoft Windows 95/98/NT platforms. The 800 service supports the Point to Point Protocol (PPP) and its predecessor the Serial Line Interface Protocol (SLIP). The access number for this new service is 1-800-997-1926.

Costs for this new service are $20 per month for the remote access account and 15 cents per minute for 800 number access.

To sign up for a remote access account, call ECT Account Services at ext. 2-5405. For information about configurations or access, call ECT Telecommunications Engineering at ext. 2-4181.

Detailed information on the new remote access system is available on the World Wide Web.

‘Predators’ take Argonne-East
softball league championship

The Predators captured the championship at Argonne's annual softball tournament on August 13-14 in Argonne Park.

Four teams vied for the top spot this year. According to Jack Burke (XFD), Predators team captain, the win was a total team effort. Standouts included pitcher Bob Bilitzki, who batted .692 for the series, and Dan Burke, who batted .769 and had a home run in each of the three games.

Talk to focus on `Bridging Gender Gaps'

"Bridging Gender Gaps: Communication Between Men and Women," a seminar by clinical psychologist Victor Dye of the Family Institute, will be held Tuesday, Sept. 8, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in Argonne-East's Building 200 Auditorium.

Dye will address the differing communication styles of men and women, and whether they are "learned roles." He will also discuss how to appreciate gender differences rather than fight them.

All Argonne and DOE employees and adult family members are invited to attend the free seminar, sponsored by the Employee Assistance Program and Preventive Health and Wellness Program.
