Argonne-West helps Chemistry Week succeed

Argonne-West contributions to National Chemistry Week helped the Idaho Section of the American Chemical Society (ACS) win two awards at the society's national meeting in Boston.

The section was awarded the Local Section Public Relations Award for its 1997 National Chemistry Week efforts. Those activities included a week-long display in Argonne-West's Building 752 lobby and numerous presentations by Argonne-West employees in area school classrooms.

The Idaho Section also received an honorable mention called the Phoenix Award for its 1997 Chemistry Week events held at the Idaho Falls Library. Activities at the library included two displays, a magic show and a day of hands-on activities.

National Chemistry Week, held the first full week in November, helps raise public awareness of the benefits of chemistry in everyday life. The 10-year-old event's success inspired a year-long International Chemistry Celebration, planned for November 1998 to November 1999.

Argonne-West's National Chemistry Week and International Chemistry Celebration activities are coordinated by Mary Adamic (ED). For more information on participating in this year's activities, call ext. 3-7858.

ANL-West firefighter vies for title of 'world's fastest'

Kevin Voyles, an Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory firefighter stationed at Argonne-West, took the title of the Northwest's fastest firefighter with a first-place finish at the Northwest Regional Combat Challenge. He and his support team have qualified to compete in the National Combat Challenge in Orlando Nov. 5-8.

Held July 11 in Missoula, Montana, the Northwest competition included firefighters from Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Utah, Washington, Wyoming and British Columbia. The field included four of the eight fastest firefighters of 1997, including the current world record holder and two former world record holders.

Voyles competed in the five-event challenge testing firefighters' skills, speed and endurance. Each competitor carried a 42-pound hose up five flights of stairs, hoisted a 45-pound bundle of hose up to the top, ran back down the stairs, used a sledge hammer to simulate chopping a hole in a roof, dragged a charged hose line 75 feet and a 175-pound dummy 100 feet.

Voyles took first place with a time of 1 minute, 35 seconds, the fastest in competition so far this year. Voyles credited his co-workers for his success and support for the extensive training required for this competition.

Voyles and his team volunteer their time to train and compete. The regimen includes weight training, running a similar course at Argonne-West's Central Facilities and running stairs at the Sodium Boiler Building.

They have qualified to compete in the National Combat Challenge in Orlando, Fla., Nov. 5-8.
