Nobel Laureate John A. Pople will speak on "Theoretical Chemical Models" at a director's special colloquium Thursday, Sept. 23. The date given in last week'sArgonne News was incorrect.
Pople's talk will begin at 3 p.m. in Argonne-East's Building 362 Auditorium. All employees whose schedules permit are invited to attend.
Pople, Board of Trustees Professor of Chemistry at Northwestern University, Evanston, received the Nobel Prize in 1998 for developing computational methods that made possible the theoretical study of molecules, their properties and how they act together in chemical reactions.
Pople made his computational techniques accessible to researchers by designing the GAUSSIAN computer program, first published in 1970. The program is used by thousands of chemists in universities and commercial companies the world over.
His current research emphasizes techniques for exploring energy surfaces using Hartree-Fock and Møller-Plesset theories.
Argonne's radiobioassay program has received accreditation, establishing it among the premier programs in the country.
The accreditation from the U.S. Department of Energy assures that Argonne meets new radiation protection program requirements that will become mandatory in the year 2001.
This accreditation was awarded for excellence after a rigorous review involving an intensive on-site audit of activities by an independent DOE-appointed audit team.
The radiobioassay program is carried out by the Environment, Safety and Health Division Analytical Laboratories as part of Argonne's internal dosimetry program for radiation workers.
These laboratories have a long history of participation in independently administered quality assurance programs and have established a superior track record of performance, said ESH Director Bob Wynveen.
Classic automobiles owned by Argonne employees will again be displayed in Argonne-East's Building 360 parking lot Wednesday, Sept. 22.
Owners of cars 25 years old and older, special interest, modified or limited production cars are invited to join the show. Employees are invited to view the cars from noon to 1 p.m., or as individual scheduling permits. Car owners will be present to answer questions. Cameras are welcome.
