Student at Argonne earns spot at prestigious Nobel conference

A Northwestern University student working on his doctoral thesis in Argonne's Physics Division has been accepted to participate in the 58th Meeting of Nobel Laureates in Lindau, Germany.

Daniel Lascar is one of a small number of students from around the world invited to attend the meeting to hear lectures by Nobel laureates and participate in discussions. Since 1953, 500 – 700 top students and young researchers from all over the world attend the event annually, often as a reward for the quality of their performance and research work, according to the Lindau Web site.

Lascar is finishing his doctoral thesis work at Argonne with the Canadian Penning Trap mass spectrometer group identifying the mass of six short-lived nuclei with astrophysical importance. The nuclei are important in the rapid neutron capture process and most of the masses on that list have never been measured.

Around the Lab

Gypsy moth

This was one of several trees stripped bare of leaves by gypsy moth caterpillars in 2007

Gypsy moth treatment
set for next week

Spraying to eliminate gypsy moth caterpillars will be conducted on the Argonne site next week. Areas affected will be north and east of Building 308. Trails through the wooded area will be cordoned off and should be avoided.

An infestation last year devastated a stand of oak trees near Building 214 and affected several other trees around the site.

Environmentalists consider gypsy moths, an invasive species introduced to the United States by a French scientist in the 1860s, to be one of the most notorious pests in the eastern United States. Gypsy moths have defoliated more than one million acres of forest every year since 1980.

DIS to host annual agent-based
modeling course

Argonne's Decision and Information Sciences Division will host its seventh annual course on agent-based modeling the week of May 12. The course is an intensive introduction to agent-based modeling and simulation (ABMS) that presents the foundational ideas of ABMS, advanced ABMS methodologies and some of the latest research in the field.

The course consists of two parts. The first half of the course focuses on ABMS concepts. The second half focuses on ABMS implementation and includes extensive hands-on exercises. Participants are invited to attend the first session, the second session, or both depending on their interests.

The first part will run from Monday, May 12, through the morning of Wednesday, May 14; the second part will run from the afternoon of Wednesday, May 14, though Friday, May 16. The course will be held in Building 900. Argonne employees are welcome to attend, but advanced reservations are required. Contact Michael North (DIS) at ext. 2-6234 for details.

Working Safely

Safety guy

'Safety Guy’ puts a face on injuries, illnesses

"Safety Guy" will soon be a familiar sight around the laboratory. Safety Guy is a graphic way to represent the recordable injuries and illnesses Argonne site employees have incurred during the fiscal year.

“Safety Guy is designed to help focus our attention on where and how employees have been injured, so management and employees can think about how similar injuries can be prevented as work is planned and carried out,” said EQO Director Danny Whitaker-Sheppard. Each marking on Safety Guy indicates the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration classification, injury location, type of injury and activity at the time of injury.

Safety Guy will be updated weekly on the Director’s Safety Council home page, and will appear on posters around the site and on bulletin boards.

“The laboratory’s goal is zero injuries, zero illnesses and zero incidents,” Whitaker-Sheppard said. “Before you begin work and while working, take a look at Safety Guy and think about safety and preventing injuries.”

Daily ORPS reports are posted online.
