The Argonne Tandem Linear Accelerator System (ATLAS) was dedicated June 3, 1985. Designed and built by Argonne, ATLAS was the world's first superconducting linear accelerator for heavy ions. The split-ring resonator in the photo is the heart of the ATLAS system.
