A technician polishes one of the split-ring resonators that accelerte ions through the Argonne Tandem-Linac Accelerator System.

The Argonne Tandem Linear Accelerator System (ATLAS) was dedicated June 3, 1985. Designed and built by Argonne, ATLAS was the world's first superconducting linear accelerator for heavy ions. The split-ring resonator in the photo is the heart of the ATLAS system.
