National Security – Protecting the American people and infrastructure

Argonne's homeland security programs provide critical technologies to prevent and mitigate events that have potential for mass disruption or destruction. Examples of these Argonne-developed technologies include portable instruments that monitor factory's smoke plumes for evidence of toxic chemicals being manufactured, integrated software that helps emergency responders react quickly and efficiently to large-scale disasters, a security system that quickly detects gaseous attacks in city subways, and magnetic nanoparticles that clean the blood of victims exposed to radiation from dirty-bomb attacks.
