Successful TRANSIMS Training Course at TRACC

So far, TRACC held three full training courses on the open source TRANSIMS software in 2008, and is preparing to hold the course for a fourth time from November 20th to 24th at the DuPage Airport Flight Center where TRACC’s offices are located. A fifth training course is being planned for December or early January in California at a location that is still to be determined. Details will be posted on the TRANSIMS web site and forum as soon as dates and location are decided upon.

TRANSIMS is increasingly used by traffic analysts across the United States for a variety of traffic forecasting and analysis projects. The TRANSIMS community has grown dramatically over the past year, with a user community of about 230 people at this time. Due to the extensive experience with the TRANSIMS application at TRACC as well as an internal need to train additional personnel and subcontractors in the use of this software application, TRACC decided to invite a number of participants from other organizations to these courses. To reach out into the TRANSIMS community, the training courses are now broadly announced on the TRANSIMS web site operated by the US Department of Transportation.

The interest in this series of training courses is much larger than originally anticipated. Typically, about 12 to 15 people participate in person, while an additional 15 to 20 participants joins the training sessions over the Internet. USDOT sponsors as well as the developers and maintainers of the code (e.g.  AECOM under subcontract with USDOT) are typically available during the training sessions by phone or Internet to provide additional insight and comments. The materials are recorded and are available in form of online lectures through the TRANSIMS web site. They are also available in form of NTSC Video DVDs upon request.

To accommodate the need for additional training capacity, a fifth TRANSIMS Training Course will be held in California later this year or early January next year. Details will be announced on the TRANSIMS web site and forum. For details, please contact
