The workings of a key staph enzyme and how to block it
March 1, 2011Researchers using the Department of Energy's Advanced Photon Source at Argonne have determined the structure and mechanism of an enzyme that performs the crucial first step in the formation of cholesterol and is a key virulence factor in staph bacteria, paving the way to the design of molecules that will be much more effective in fighting staph infections and parasitic diseases, and potentially, in cholesterol-lowering.
