Guiding Question

Can we create new materials and discover new approaches that can be used to direct the character and nature of electrochemical reactions within electrode materials?

Research Context

While the electrochemical reactions are thermodynamically controlled, the pathway of an electrochemically driven reaction within an electrode can be influenced and controlled. For example, the dimensionality of nano-structured electrodes can be used to influence the initiation of lithiation reactions in a material. More generally, the stoichiometry of a reaction can be modified through the use of dual-functioning electrode/electrocatalysts that enable reversible Li and oxygen extraction from a Li-transition-metal-oxide crystal structure (net loss = Li2O) and re-accommodation while allowing partial redox of the transition metal ions.
