Argonne National Laboratory

About CSE

From new batteries to solar fuels, the solutions to the energy challenges that America faces in the 21st Century will depend upon advances and breakthroughs in chemistry. Only at a national laboratory like Argonne can scientists from around the world bring together their expertise at state-of-the-art facilities dedicated to developing energy technologies that will make for a safer, more sustainable, and richer world.

Through partnerships both at the laboratory and with colleagues from academia and industry, researchers in Argonne’s Chemical Sciences and Engineering division work tirelessly to uncover the secrets of energy. Argonne is a world leader in the field of battery development and energy storage research, and is home to the Joint Center for Energy Storage Research, the Department of Energy-funded battery research hub, as well as other major initiatives based around chemistry.

Argonne’s chemistry research spans both the fundamental and the applied, as discoveries in basic science are further examined for their implications in real world technologies. The future of chemistry, and the future of energy, relies on efforts that combine theory, materials development, analysis and testing, computation and modeling, and good program management.
