DOEGrids Certificate Request Guidelines
for ANL Staff and their Collaborators

This web page provides specific guidelines for ANL users and their collaborators who want to apply for DOEGrids certificates. These instructions supplement the prime guidance provided by the DOEGrids Certification Authority.

Based on Appendix G of DOE Grid's CP/CPS version 2.3, the Argonne National Laboratory Registration Authority (RA) is authorized to issue certificates to the staff and affiliates of Argonne National Laboratory.

  • Staff is defined as employees of the Laboratory.
  • Affiliates are those individuals that are affirmed as collaborators by Argonne staff.

Users should directly request user or service certificates by filling out the CA certificate request form. You will be asked to provide the following information, some of which will be used by the ANL RA to verify your identity:

  • Under Contact Information, set your Affiliation (virtual organization) as ANL if you are an ANL staff member or a collaborator of an ANL staff member.
    • If you are not an ANL staff member or the collaborator of an ANL staff member, ask yourself if one of the other listed affiliations is better suited for you. You should select the affiliation most capable of verifying your status as a member of that group or institution. For most people this will be their home institution. If you are still unsure or if multiple affiliations still seem to apply, please contact the ANL RA.

Note:  This field determines which RA will validate your certificate request and whose certificate request process applies to a certificate request.

  • The Sponsor Information section,
    • May be left blank if you are an ANL staff member
    • Must contain the name and contact information of your ANL collaborator if you are a collaborator of an ANL staff member

  • In the Additional Comments please provide any additional contact information that will enable the ANL RA staff to contact you. The ANL RA validates all certificate requests. The inability to contact the certificate requestor and the requestor’s collaborator will delay certificate issuance.

  • In case you are using Netscape, please select 1024 in the key length box at the bottom of the page. On the other hand, if you are using IE, please select Microsoft Enhanced Cryptographic Provider.

After your certificate request has been submitted you will be contacted by the ANL RA staff to validate your certificate request. ANL staff will likely be asked to display or fax their badge to the RA. In the case of an affiliate, their collaborator will be contacted to verify the affiliate’s status as a collaborator.

Shortly thereafter, the certificate request will be approved. You will receive an email from the DOE Grids CA informing you to retrieve your certificate from a secured website and how to import a PKCS12 formatted certificate into your web browser.

Please follow instructions at the CA's website to request grid service certificates and to export your certificate for globus uses.
