Part-Time Computer Science (or related discipline) Co-Op

The Global Security Sciences Division at Argonne National Laboratory is looking for a part-time Computer Sceince (or related discipline) co-op student to work in the Information Systems Security and Operations section for the upcoming academic year. The section develops and operates national security related IT systems for various sponsors and projects.

The prospective co-op student is expective to have:

  • Excellent analytical skills and the ability to troubleshoot and resolve software problems
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work in a team enviornment
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Ability to research and understand technical documentation, and an understanding of how to apply various technical resources
  • A GPA of 3.0 or better
  • Enrollment in an undergraduate degree program in Computer Science, Management Information Systems, Software Engineering, or related IT discipline
  • US citizenship

Basic knowledge in at least three of the following categories is required:

  • Web browers such as Internet Explorere and Firefox
  • Operating Systems
  • Software Development Lifecycle
  • Relational Database Software
  • Java Programming Language
  • CASE tools

Scope of work duties will include the following:

  • Provide help desk assistance to web application users
  • Participate in functional testing of new software releases along with some basic system administration and cyber security tasks
  • Opportunities for entry level software engineering and system adminstration work is availalble if that is of interest to the student

 

Part-time Sophomore or Junior Level Physics, Chemistry or Engineering Co-op

As part of the Center for Accelerator Target Science (CATS),a major new initiative is underway - the Target Library Project where targets that are collected nationwide need to be stored and cataloged in detail for wider reuse by the U.S. Low Energy Physics community.

Duties will include assisting in target preparation in support of the low-energy experimental nuclear physics program being carried out at ATLAS, including:  

  • Perform target thickness calculations
  • Perform simulations
  • Archive target preparation records

Qualifications:

  • Some knowledge of physics and chemistry
  • Computer skills including Microsoft office suite applications

 

Part-time Sophomore or Junior Level Computer Science Co-op

The Information Solutions (IS) group of the Advanced Photon Source Engineering Support Division at Argonne National Laboratory is looking for a part-time Computer Science Co-op student to assist Software Engineer (IT staff) in the following activities:

  • Assist in the installation of Windows and Macintosh hardware and software
  • Assist in network and hardware troubleshooting
  • Design and develop dynamic Web interface with HTML, Css, JavaScript, jQuery, extJS libraries
  • Assist in the development of software projects as determined by IT staff
  • Fix bugs and enhance existing applications

Qualifications

  • Good knowledge and some experience in designing and creating dynamic web interface with HTML, JavaScript, CSS, Flask, jQuery, and Bootstrap
  • Good knowledge and some experience of Object Oriented programming with Python and PHP, and other computer languages such as Linux scripts, SQL, etc.
  • Good knowledge in data structure and relational database
  • Good trouble shooting and problem solving skills
  • Fast learner for new technologies
  • Basic knowledge of networking, Linux and Windows operating system and PC hardware

 

Sophomore or Junior Level Science, Mathematics or Engineering Co-Op

The Physics Division at Argonne is building a new superconducting accelerator module for an upgrade of Fermilab’s facilities. We are looking for a student to help with all aspects of this work which will include: high vacuum systems, low-power low-noise electronics, high precision alignment hardware and ultra-clean techniques for the handling and processing of superconducting accelerator cavities. There will be a focus on using Labview to control the hardware used to dynamically excite superconducting cavities being tested at -452 F.

Qualifications:

  • Some knowledge of physics
  • Some knowledge of computer programming
  • Computer skills are to include the Microsoft Office suite of software.

 

Part-Time Computer Science Co-op

The Information Solutions (IS) group of the Advanced Photon Source Engineering Support Division at Argonne National Laboratory is looking for a part-time Computer Science Co-op student to assist Software Engineer (IT staff) in the following activities:

  • Design and code web applications with oracle database back-end
  • Design and develop dynamic Web interface with HTML, Css, JavaScript, jQuery, extJS libaries
  • Maintain and query data from oracle database
  • Fix bugs and enhance the enterprise applications

Qualifications

  • Good knowledge and some experience in designing and creating dynamic web interface with HTML, JavaScript, CSS, jQuery, Bootstrap, and extJS
  • Good knowledge and some experience of OO programming with Java and PHP, and other computer languages such as Python, Linux scripts, SQL, etc.
  • Good knowledge of enterprise application MVC frameworks, such as Spring, JavaServer Faces, ZEND framework

Computer Science/Web Developer or Related Field - Communications, Education and Public Affairs Division

The Creative Services group of the Communications, Education and Public Affairs Division at Argonne National Laboratory is looking for two (2) part-time Computer Science Co-op students. The students will assist the senior web developer in the following activities:

  • Update and maintain information-oriented and dynamic web sites for internal and external use
  • Build page layouts using Argonne’s web content management systems (WordPress and Drupal)
  • Prepare and load content and images
  • Interact and collaborate with members of the creative services team

Responsibilities:

  • Ability to work independently
  • Very good oral and written communication skills as well as good interpersonal relationship skills
  • Attention to detail and quality of work
  • Experience maintaining and configuring WordPress sites
  • Experience configuring WordPress themes and plugins
  • Experience optimizing and working with images for the web
  • Considerable knowledge of HTML 5
  • Considerable knowledge of CSS
  • Familiar with responsive design concepts
  • Basic knowledge of JavaScript

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience developing WordPress themes and plugins

Requirements:

  • College sophomore or junior in a Computer Science/Web Developer related field;
  • Demonstrated proficiency Co-op students are preferred to commit at least one year of work;
  • Sixteen (16) hours per week while classes are in session, and full-time during summer and academic breaks, with some adjustments for final exams or major academic project work.
