Abstract:
The Materials Science Division and the Energy System Division have had a long history of successful collaborative efforts. However, as the priorities in Washington shift toward more applied R&D work, more collaboration is needed. This presentation will provide an overview of the “applied” funding agencies in DOE (EERE and ARPA-E), the capabilities of the Energy Systems Division at Argonne, and will demonstrate how successful basic-applied collaboration occurred in three case studies: Ultrananocrystalline Diamond for Pump Seals, Atomic Layer Deposition for Large Area Picosecond Photo Detectors, and Nanostructured Exchange-Spring Magnets.
