Abstract:
Good strategies are important for discovering useful materials. In this talk, I will introduce some of my works on thermoelectric materials, solid-oxide fuel-cell (SOFC) materials, and topological insulators, showcasing the challenges of materials by design. In the case of thermoelectric materials, taking advantage of extra degrees of freedom, such as spin and orbital, turns out to be useful. In SOFC materials, optimizations of crystal structures help enhance ionic mobilities. For topological insulators, I will elaborate on how they can be useful for energy technologies and how their issues have been solved by appropriate designs of materials
