Abstract:
In the United States, the number of undergraduate physics majors has been on the rise for more than a decade. With this growth, we have seen significant changes in student body composition along with changes in student motivations and goals. In order to adapt and be relevant in the 21st century, the physics community and physics departments must change our culture. In this day and age, our job is more than simply producing more Ph.D.’s for research careers. In this talk, I will discuss some of the issues we have encountered at the University of Illinois and some of the steps we have taken to make our courses and degree programs relevant to a larger student population.
