Abstract: The demonstration of a controlled and sustained nuclear chain reaction, Chicago Pile 1 (CP-1), was a pivotal development for both physicists and chemists. This new nuclear reactor technology necessitated the development of an entirely new area of chemistry necessary for the operation of CP-1 and subsequent nuclear reactors. Moreover, the chemistry that developed out of CP-1 has been transformative to our understanding of the arrangement of the periodic table and fundamental concepts in chemical periodicity. During this presentation, I will provide a brief chemical history of the periodic system prior to CP-1 and the impact and contributions of CP-1 to the modern periodic table to present day.
