Abstract:
In the first part of my talk, I will introduce the idea of atomic clusters as superatoms, and talk briefly about some of our earlier work on transition metal (TM)- alkali clusters. This will take us to the idea of magnetic superatoms. In this context I will present results of our most recent work on TM-alkaline earth clusters. I will elaborate on how a subtle interplay between Hund's coupling and `crystal-field' effect gives a control with which one can tune the properties of these clusters. Then I will introduce FeMg8 and FeCa8 as a new class of magnetic superatoms. In the second part, I will talk about some of our on-going work on adsorption of TM atoms on the 2D hybrid material h-BNC.
